Re: Safety Gear

In my opinion, hard shell knee pads are almost a decade behind in technology when compared to soft shell pads at this point. The rate of energy absorption for a D30-type soft shell is worlds better than an old hard shell style pad (most of this is coming from the mountain biking world but it transla...

Re: Mounting inserts for both tele and AT bindings on the same ski?

Yes, I have done this on a few pairs as well. Works great for me since I usually tele but occasionally still want to go back to the dark side a few times a season. Inserts work awesome. Getting the mount patterns to work without interference can be tricky. I usually use a CAD program to make sure th...

Re: BCXC binding mount 15mm behind the balance point?

I anticipate 60% rolling terrain 40% downhill. We ski at a lift service area so we always have to decend down to the base area. After putting the binding on top of the ski it shifted the balance point directly under the previously marked point. I'm pretty happy with that placement I think.

BCXC binding mount 15mm behind the balance point?

Hi all Got my lady set up with a new XC setup for the winter. They were originally mounted with SNS Profile BC bindings but I am replacing with NNN BC Magnums. 160cm skis for reference. Anyway, the drill patterns match so that I can re-mount into the old holes (she is very light so with epoxy I'm no...

Re: Meidjo with Alpine boots?

Although I don't have personal experience with the Meidjo I remember reading in a review that the release on the dynafit heel for the Meidjo is very weak and is meant to be used in conjunction with the second heel on the binding. I think the heel's release would be too weak to use by itself. However...

"Junior" Sized 150 waxless BCXC skis?

I'm curious if anyone has seen any brands selling smaller Junior sized backcountry xc skis. Looking to get my lady a metal edged setup. Looking around, many of the 150ish size skis are labeled as Junior skis and go for about half the price. Also I have been unable to find anything under 160cm with a...

I think Vibratite is the answer. And you might first try teflon tape.

I agree with this. I have had pretty good results using teflon tape (just standard plumber's pipe tape).

Re: name this turn

I always heard it referred to as "slarving" or "smearing". That may be referring more of the McConkey-style off piste skid turn. Anybody who has skied Pontoons or similar powder skis knows what I'm talking about, those giant skis just don't like to turn any other way. This kind o...
