Re: Merrel ultras and garmont excursions

With all of the excitement over the Andrew boots, thought I'd bump this to the top.

Re: Wooden Ski Care and Preparation

Hope this goes forward. A few years ago I re-fell in love with the old woodies. Sadly, my old trysl knuts bought at barneys sport chalet in anchorage in 1976 were just about ready to become wallhangers. Bought a set of ems. (Asnes I think), from greg at wooden skis. They were almost too pretty to sk...

Re: Advice on a BC touring setup?

That bit of snow mostly in the kick zone, doesn't look like you are waxed too warm to me. When you start skiing the backcountry trails you talked about in earlier posts,I would rather err on the more kick and less glide side. Nothing more fatiguing than skis slipping back every kick. That being said,...

Re: Advice on a BC touring setup?

If the bases look dry and chalky, I would glide wax them with a warm wax or even parrafin to nourish these bases. Then scrape, scrape scrape, followed with a brushing. The kick wax doesnt adhere well to glide wax,but if the bases have been neglected, the glide waxing will help. For this type of skiing,...

Re: Advice on a BC touring setup?

Yes , In fact my quiver of 12 ski sets has only one set of waxless(fishscale) skis, and they are for in track. Backcountry waxing is much simpler than groomed trail ski waxing. Sometimes I kick wax the whole ski, much like we used to do (and I still do) on the old wood skis.

Re: Advice on a BC touring setup?

I am sure a lot more knowledgeable people than I will help you out,but since I tend to ski the terrain and conditions you describe,I will take a stab at it. If I were to buy a new set of skis for this, they would probably be madshus glittertinds. Lots of great reviews on these skis. My go to skis fo...

Re: The Norpine Thread

Not sure what norpine is, but maybe me erbacher telemarks with rottefella 3 pin cable fit the bill. Also my black diamond toute neige with rainey superloops). Used to use these with voile snakeskin climbing skins and those purple triangular posts which were strapped behind the boot, and put under the...

Re: The Finest Nordic Norm (NN) 75mm Backcountry Boots

I don't believe merrel ultras have been made in years. They were a laceup boot with no buckle, but were the next step below the super comp as far as stiffness. I endured many a blister, before I learned to duct tape my heels. My old ultras could use a resole, and I have worn a hole in the lining from...

Re: The Finest Nordic Norm (NN) 75mm Backcountry Boots

My faves are my merrel ultras, followed by my asolo snowfields. Got 2 pairs of excursions that I just can't say I love. That being said, I am an old fart that tours backcountry trails, rather than a telemarker.Btw, will soon be posting for sale (once again), a brand new in the box pair of ultras size...
