Noob skiier here, struggled with slippery conditions near Mt. Hood staying just below freezing with old, choppy snow. Skis too long?

Hey everyone, I've skied downhill for 20 years, but I decided to pick up XC skiing after recently moving to Oregon. I picked up some of the Asnes surplus skis on the cheap as my first pair.
