Re: XC-skiing in breakable crust?

I skied up and down Mount Crow yesterday. It was a group of eight lead by a nice fellow I haven’t skied with before. The up was steep but fine although a bit slow as is usually the case with a group. The down was pretty miserable as we were in very heavy trees on a steep slope (30 degrees plus in pl...

Hydration

Over many years of backcountry skiing I have never found the perfect solution to staying hydrated. Do you use water or a sports drink? How much do you carry for a given time or distance? How do you carry it? I’ve used everything from a skin to hydration packs - both bad ideas. Now I just use a colla...

Re: Mounting 75mm on modern AT/BC downhill skis

You are thinking it through way more than I ever have. I just follow Voile recommended mounting point and it’s always worked for mr (except when I screw up). FWIW you suggest an issue with getting weight forward for the turn and compare it to alpine skiing. In my analysis of telemark turns, t...

Re: Women's NNN-BC boots

My wife has an exceptionally narrow foot that is hard to fit. She wears an NN 75mm Alaska with an insole and extra socks. It’s not ideal but it’s the best she’s found. Hope they work for your wife.

Re: Cold Clothing

Thanks for all the responses. Very helpful. I used to wear German Army Pants in the 70s. They must have made WAY too many of those! I found them a bit heavy and prone to getting wet especially for multiday trips. Normally I wear MEC T3 longjohns (polyester) under Helle Hansen ‘goretex’ (their versio...

Cold Clothing

Many of you routinely ski in colder conditions than I usually encounter. Around here winter temperatures are normally between -5 and -10 (about 15 - 25 F) with rare cold spells to -20 (-4 F). Of course wind can change the feel of any of those temperatures! We’re at -14 today which has me thinking ab...

Re: If you could only have one ski for your most typical skiing...

One? But both of you pick two! I’ll go for one and that is the Rossignol125BC. It’s not a ski to love on the cross country track but if you are into skiing to earn your turns it will reward you so much when tightly turning down hill, even on narrow trails, that you will forgive it any uphill lapses....
