Re: Help Me Learn How to Turn...

Lots of good advice above, but give it some time before you jump to a different ski setup. If it's any help, keep in mind that backcountry downhill skiing on XC gear takes a lot of time and practice. Its a little bit like learning to swim. It doesn't seem natural at first and looks easy from the sid...

Re: New to xcd, need help figuring out gear for rivervalley exploring

I have not skied the Scott Excursion boots, but I have owned a couple pairs of the Scarpa T4's, which are similar in their capabilities. If you are leaning toward a plastic boot, then that indicates to me that you probably want a more downhill focused ski. Fischer's Adventure line of skis (Traverse ...

Re: New to xcd, need help figuring out gear for rivervalley exploring

This is a great place to start. Lots of experience and advice available here. The good news is that you have some skiing experience and know that your current setup isn't working as well as you had hoped for off trail XCD skiing. While I don't know what is best for you, this is what I would pick for...

Re: Voile V6 BC (fishscale version)

I picked the 173's based on Voile's recommendation. I weigh about 165 lbs (75 kg) all geared up and I'm 68 inches (173 cm) tall. Voile's recommended weight range for the 173's is 120 - 190 lbs. I also ski 178 cm Voile Objective BC skis with a 3 pin and soft boots. The V6's at 173 work great for me. ...

Re: GPS Apps and touring speed

Thanks for the responses, I think I'll load the runkeeper app on my wifes phone to compare with strava and I also plan to use one with the ability to download topo maps. It's a slippery slope. :) If you are an "A" type it will drive you crazy. I've been on group outings where people are using apple...

Re: Voile V6 BC (fishscale version)

I've have one full season skiing the Hyper V6 BC / Switchback X2 / Scarpa T2 boots under my belt and I give the skis two thumbs up. They are the best backcountry downhill skis I have ever owned for skiing in the Rockies of Northwest Wyoming. I haven't skied the regular V6's. The only downside to the...

Re: NNNBC Touring Boot Question

I haven't skied all the boots you are considering, but I have owned the Fischer OTX 5, the Rossignol BC X-6, and I'm currently skiing the Alfa Skarvet GTX. The Skarvet GTX is my favorite of the bunch.

Re: GPS Apps and touring speed

I also use GAIA GPS on my Android Smartphone for navigation, both in summer and in winter. I really like that you can plan your outing at home on the computer, download USGS topo maps, and then use the app in the woods in areas where there is no cell coverage. It also compiles all the speed, distanc...

Re: GPS Apps and touring speed

I've been using a garmin GPS watch, the vivioactive 3, for the past couple of years, and I like it alot. You can customize the watch face to show just about any metric you would like to track; distance, moving speed, split times, pace, elevation, elevation gained/lost, heartrate, calories burned, ti...
