Re: Touring speed comparison of skinny dbl camber vs. fat fishscaled ski

I don't think I came up with hard conclusions, more a generalization that wide and especially scaled skis aren't necessarily sluggish boat anchors. I agree with you- and I certainly don't mean to give the impression that I think they are sluggish boat anchors- I don't. I just don't do myself any fa...

Re: Touring speed comparison of skinny dbl camber vs. fat fishscaled ski

but it confirmed my belief that it's not the ski that determines your speed as much as the boots. I consider the T4 to be in the same weight class as my Ultras as far as touring. My conclusions were that the T4s although a little heavier toured as well as the leather boots and handled the downhill ...

Re: Ski Review: Altai Kom 162cm

Gareth I am a bit disappointed that in my lack of experience my voice was one that said 3 pin Hardwire. I just don't have the terrain where I would experience the benefits of a free pivot binding. Hey Bob, Well- the 3-pin hardwire still does make sense. My very local (literally out my backdoor) ter...

Re: Ski Review: Altai Kom 162cm

Good review Lc. I could have bought a pair at the local consignment shop for 220 bucks mounted with 3pin cables. They were gone the next day. Probably the reason I don't mind touring on the HWs is because I'm used to a heavy leather boot as opposed to an nnn bc set up. I'm glad you have a plan for ...

Re: Ski Review: Altai Kom 162cm

I suspect you would enjoy touring on the Koms better with SB's or some other free pivot binding. IMO, it makes these types of skis much easier to tour and climb with. Yes, you have to figure out how to pressure differently for K+G, but it's not that big of a deal. The duckbill on the T4s/Excursions...

Ski Review: Altai Kom 162cm

So- to start- I have already made at least one mistake with this ski already. First mistake: thinking that my first test should be to cross-country ski- in hilly terrain- some ~8kms (5miles) in VERY deep snow (50cm of powder), in order to access some sweet, steep ravines…. A XC ski the Kom ain’t- pe...

Re: "wing" mod for nnn

The only mod I think I would like (other than climbing wires) for NNNBC would be a "downhill" mode, where with the flick of the switch a second plate or bar would prevent you from lifting your ball-of-foot/metatarsus off the ski. The XC power of NNN is the complete range of motion, coupled...

Re: "wing" mod for nnn

I was only half serious with that suggestion, but I always thought it would be a good learning tool. If anyone would try it I think t$ is the guy. The purpose is not to create tip pressure like an active binding does. Rather it is to force you to change your stance by moving your hips back over you...

Re: "wing" mod for nnn

(but seems like that is reinventing alpine gear??) Not at all- Alpine bindings have a fixed heel. just thinking that there has to be some way to marry a little bit more of the control of the 3p into the nnnbc platform. Not sure if I understand what you are getting at here? Are you saying that the 3...
