greatgt:

Eloquent comment that really defines the novelty and adventure of skiing. Your words or were you quoting TM's?

Re: skiing is good for your mental health

Woodserson:

Thanks for posting. Skiing really is the only thing that makes perfect sense. When you are doing that turn your mind is accutely in the moment and all other wordly static is shut out. That's why skiing is so good for our minds and souls.

skiing is good for your mental health

Last November, my husband and I moved (development refugees) from an urban area in SW Montana (30 years) to a rural town in SW Montana. OMG: culture shock/moving shock. I drove the distance to YNP and skied a number of great powder day! And, I also found some good skiing in the mountains in area whe...

Re: The Rockpile last week- pics

Good technique does not necessarily equal good backcountry skills. I would rather ski with someone in the backcountry who can only snowplows down a slope if they have good route finding and decision making skills (e.g., ability to assess snow stability, capable of reading topography and navigating, ...

Your technique and style look so effortless and smooth! Rotten snow sucks. You obviously worked hard for your turns. Thanks for posting photos/adventure

Re: Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

lowangle al: Nothing like a reality check (avalanches on slopes you had been on) to remind us of our mortality and the need to be aware and cautious. Your route finding skills are probably very keen at this point in time. You mentioned propagating fractures and wind loaded slab releases. It is reall...

Re: Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

Woodserson: Appreciate your thoughtful, astute comment. I think the extent of blunt force injuries in avalanches are often over-looked. It seems like the big fear is not being able to breathe; when in fact, traumatic fractures and head injury may be the cause of death. Plus, even if your partners ca...

Re: Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

fisheater: Thanks for your wise comments on parenting. My son didn't tell me because he didn't want me to "worry." Truth be told I think he didn't tell me because he thought I would berate him because he was 46 years old when he was caught in the avalanche! The terrain is obviously potenti...

Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5s_xbkIF1c My son fessed up that he and a friend were caught in an avalanche in the Gore Range (Colorado) 2016. He and his friend were lucky they survived. What's a parent to do? This video reinforces my thoughts about skiing in avalanche terrain: the snow pack can b...

Re: Scales vs. Kicker-Skins

Mohair skins are superior to synthetic. They glide so much better. I have always favored kick wax or mohair skins over scales. I feel resistance from the scales on the downhill. I guess it is just personal preference. Last season I was commenting about using skins versus wax because of the environme...
