Re: Attn: Catskill skiers

D'hostie, I'm not familiar with the MTB system there, but you can ski the main hiking trail that forms the beginning of the Escarpment trail up to the location of the trail sign shown in your link's photo gallery. From there it is 2.2 miles up and along the ridge to the summit (3524') of Windham Hig...

Re: Why are americans fat?

Mike, the time may come… when you've got your turns dialed in… and you'll surf through a series of turns getting the best of the terrain and realize you're doing it well, and actually enjoying it. And, then you'll say to yourself, "that's what they've all been talking about" or maybe "that's what I'...

Re: Backcountry ski lessons

Mike, it is sounding to me like what you need to do is find yourself a golf course,or any open hillside, and go work some laps on some wide open soft hills till she gets the hang of skiing downhill. Let her experiment, mirror what you've learned, on her own gear. When she's comfy with it, then head ...

Re: Backcountry ski lessons

Mike, Belleayre and I believe Plattekill Mtn in the Catskills have tele instruction. And, they have women who teach all downhill disciplines. Both hills have nice long easy trails to go play on afterward. The BC conditions here in southern NY are going to hell in a hand basket quick with the recent ...

Re: Pads?

Years ago when Chouinard and other manufacturers came out with tele specific knee pads, an additional concern was slamming your knee into your boards not so much into hidden dangers in the snow. Especially with the lower stance so commonly used back then. Skiing the bumps or otherwise rough terrain,...

Re: Pads?

Definitely, I have to buy a pair of those protections, even if that means extra weight in my backpack. Or can I tour with the knee protection on? Though we are having an extraordinary snow year here in NY, our local hills don't usually get such good cover. Even the foot trails we use on the up are ...

Re: How about wooden skis?

Check out this site: http://www.woodenskis.com A good site for those interested in wooden skis, history, repair, maintenance, etc.. Three years ago, I found a pair of beat up 205 cm Bonna 2000 Turlangrenn with 75mm Skilom bindings in a bin at our local recycle center. $5 later, they were mine, and t...
