Lift assisted BC/XC Cascade Mini "Tour"

When it's noon and the mountains say snow and the wife says "Go" you go. Even if the Avy warning is at moderate and you have to go solo. Got to the "trail head" at 1 when spaces start opening in the parking lot. 20 feet of human powered vert got me up another 1200. lift.JPG 50 feet of vertical using...

Re: Pictures, pictures and pictures!

Definitely would recommend NB. Our ski shop is owned by a Swiss Mountain guide and caters to all things for alpine touring. Two climbing walls and a bike park. Resident elk herd. Bears, mountain lions, homeless travelers, 2nd Amendment nutjobs and Microsoft Execs all mixed together. Summer is 6 week...

Re: Pictures, pictures and pictures!

It's Mt Si in North Bend Wa. Snow this low is unusual. Only the 2nd time in the 8 years we have been here. The 3' of snow closed all the roads of for a week. This old railroad bed runs behind our house and goes east for hundreds of miles.

The golf course has been open for skiing this winter. Two week ago I played golf here and two weeks from now I'll play again. It snowed 3' in 3 days here in the valley and THREE FEET IN ONE DAY up on the mountain.

Re: The First Crossing of Greenland

Cool pictures. Off into the unknown during the age of discovery. A few years ago a husband and wife trained for a successful unassisted unsupported ski trek to the South Pole by pulling truck tires up the old railroad bed behind my house. But I'd agree overall fitness had to be better when foods wer...

Re: wax vs scales vs XSkin vs klister

I live in the PNW with a wet maritime snow and wax all of my skins. Better glide and they don't get wet and stretch or ice up. I crayon the wax on and go over it with an iron on a low heat. Takes 10 - 20 slow passes. I raised the heat and reduced the passes as I got more experience. I have some leg ...

I also have a pair of Birkebeiner's blocked and sealed with tar and a full wax kit. Someday one of my grand kids will discover them and take them out. Needed bench for the shop.

Re: wax vs scales vs XSkin vs klister

Did you wax your skins? I crayon some wax on mine and then use a warm iron to melt the wax into the fibers.

Re: the 12th Man

I'll have to be sure that I see that. My father served in Norway at the end of the war with a unit that included the remnants of the 99th Infantry (Seperate). The 99th was an American unit made up of Norwegian immigrants who could ski and wanted to volunteer for a commando role. They trained with th...
