new ski building resources

Hey all, I've posted on here (maybe with a little too much pride) my previous ski builds out of steam-bent maple, but this method wasn't without drawbacks: -rock maple boards are relatively hard to come by in the dimensions that I need them (and quarter-sawn helps!) and processing larger boards down...

Allegany State Park

Just getting around to posting this-- Had a great weekend at Allegany State Park in NY just a few weekends ago. Rented a cabin ($80/night) that had heat and electricity, a stove, a refrigerator, and four beds. Really wonderful place for some low-angle skiing. The first day my partner and I just tool...

Re: Binding wedges?

Sorta unrelated, but I can't help telling this story every time I get the chance. I knew this 70 year old snow boarder who just put wooden shims (a la the cheapos from Home Depot) between his bindings and his board. He also didn't like the support his snow board boots gave him so he brought six inch...

Re: making wooden skis

I've gotten the bug for making skis over the last few years. They're a lot more approachable than other projects (boats come to mind) but the satisfaction factor is really high, and there's still a lot of thought that can go into changing geometries. So far mine have been altai hok variants. The way...

advice on ski selection and other things

So this past weekend I skied Avalanche Pass in the Adirondacks on my new Ingstads and learned a few things that left me (as usual) with more questions. We actually did avalanche pass and then drove to the garden parking lot and skied into Johns Brook Loj for the night...getting in at 8:30 (but we we...

Re: Broke my x-skins second time using them

I've been going hot-waxed polar the full length and then I think I was using swix blue extra. It was snow that was dumped the day before, can't remember the temperature but I think it was around 20-22 F (on the cold side for blue extra). What I was trying to climb was really short steep hills. I'm u...

Broke my x-skins second time using them

Moral of the story: take them off when when skiing down stairs in just six inches of cover. In other news, has anyone had any luck with full length skins on the ingstad? I’m finding I’d like more grip for ascents.

Winter Storm Harper

Hey all, Just thought I'd post about my skiing the last couple of days. Not exactly a trip, unless you count driving 20 minutes to the local state forest as a trip. Anyway, we here in Ithaca got about a foot of snow with the latest storm, so I was finally able to get out and properly test my homemad...
