Re: 2014 Fischer E-99 Crown

Hi Ben, No- I think the Nordic rocker is fine (though I think the current E99 Xtralite has bit too much for my liking on a ski in this class). My issue is not the Nordic rocker but the soft unstable front section of the ski- I have recently realized that we all keep talking about the "tip" of a ski-...

Re: 2014 Fischer E-99 Crown

So I have been very much enjoying my 210cm E-99 Crown Xtralite this weekend. We still have over a metre of base that is now actively melting. Woodsy trails and open fields on warm wet snow. Snow is highy variable from hard and icy, to fully consolidated and stable corn, to soft wet stable, to soft w...

Re: warm wet snow: kicker skins vs soft kick wax

Finding some limitations to very soft kick wax (e.g. red-silver) this week as I have been skiing close to the homestead on trails and through mixedwood. There is alot of conifer debris on the snow (as compared to open hardwood glades) following some strong wind this week. All of those twigs and coni...

Re: XC oriented ski for max float on dry snow

lilcliffy - Can you compare/contrast the NATO and Kom (176 length) in terms of trail breaking on flats and climbs in really soft snow? I've read some other posts of yours and have a good idea of the comparison, but wanted your latest thoughts on them. I may eventually end up with both, but I think ...

Re: XC oriented ski for max float on dry snow

Skiing has always been part of the Finnish way of life. In a sparsely populated country, a light and stable ski was needed for long hikes. Especially in northern Finland, ski trips were usually tens of kilometers, even hundreds of kilometers. I have always wondered why ski technology and culture di...

Re: XC oriented ski for max float on dry snow

Welcome, WavyGravy! While I agree that flotation is important in the context you describe- it is not the only factor that matters in a deep powder XC ski. A full-length supportive flex is just as important- ESPECIALLY with any ski that has significant sidecut. There is nothing worse than trying to X...

Re: E99 vs. Outback 68 vs. Sporten Ranger

Do you want a waxless-scaled ski or a smooth waxable base?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Gammes here. This is supposed to be a cult forum.

They're not un-turny, immensely good fun, and can get you long distances up hills, nein?
Wasn't going to comment....
But- can't resist-
Yes- the Gamme 54 BC is currently THE ski in this class...
