Re: Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

Woodserson: Appreciate your thoughtful, astute comment. I think the extent of blunt force injuries in avalanches are often over-looked. It seems like the big fear is not being able to breathe; when in fact, traumatic fractures and head injury may be the cause of death. Plus, even if your partners ca...

Re: Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

fisheater: Thanks for your wise comments on parenting. My son didn't tell me because he didn't want me to "worry." Truth be told I think he didn't tell me because he thought I would berate him because he was 46 years old when he was caught in the avalanche! The terrain is obviously potentially very ...

Avalanche Gore Range Colorado 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5s_xbkIF1c My son fessed up that he and a friend were caught in an avalanche in the Gore Range (Colorado) 2016. He and his friend were lucky they survived. What's a parent to do? This video reinforces my thoughts about skiing in avalanche terrain: the snow pack can b...

Re: Scales vs. Kicker-Skins

Mohair skins are superior to synthetic. They glide so much better. I have always favored kick wax or mohair skins over scales. I feel resistance from the scales on the downhill. I guess it is just personal preference. Last season I was commenting about using skins versus wax because of the environme...

Re: Another reason to avoid ski lifts

Thanks for posting. Definitely a reminder of why I don't do mechanized skiing: too many people, low-skilled lift operators or other minimum wage people, reckless skiers who never learned basic edge control because of fat, easy-turning boards. I have always thought getting on or off lifts is the most...

Re: Lynx in my yard

Great photos! You are fortunate to have such incredible wildlife in your yard! I have never seen a Lynx although I have encountered many other creatures. I had a wolf lope downhill within 4 feet of me while I taking a break from skiing resting on a slope. It is not just about the snow: wildlife is w...

Harris:

Thanks for posting: smooth and graceful big mountain Telemark skier. He may feel the pressure and responsibility of fatherhood but he seems young to me. Older is when half your cohort really are dying and you become very aware that your time skiing and other earthly pleasures are finite.

Sorry to pour on the bad news, but I think always being conscious and aware of the risks of off-piste/backcountry skiing might prevent death or injury. Sad to hear about these guys.

lilcliffy:

Thanks for posting this. It is refreshing to see community building rather than shameless self-promotion and runaway individualism. We also know that Norwegians make great skis (e.g., Asnes).
