Scales don't work on ice, which I assume is what you were skiing on, given the temperatgures. Kicker skins might be easier than ice klister, which is probably the wax you would use.

10 inches at Bluewood (4500 ft). Thursday night. 16 inches Saturday night.
None in Walla Walla itself. Looks like the snow level is about 2000 ft. here.

For climbing, Alpina patterns on Discovery or Control. I haven't tried the really wide Alpina's, I would assume the patterns are also good for climbing.

I am surprised that you are getting the advice to avoid waxless skis. If you are breaking trail, the glide isn't going to be much different with waxable or waxless skis. I don't think you have to worry about icy conditions in NE Washington, so grip is not an issue with waxless skis. It may be a lii...

I don't know where you are, but it's easier to learn good xc striding technique in groomed tracks, if you have any nearby. For that, you would need narrower skis. If you don't want to buy, you may want to rent a few times.

This post makes me wish I was younger and was physically up to the elevation gain here.

Next time you are in the area, you might want to check out Harriman State Park for some nice scenery and xc skiing.
