Re: Alternatives to Alpina Alaska 75mm
The one common binding system may be Xplore. However, for me I am invested in 75 mm, and I do not believe Xplore can outperform 75 mm downhill. At least not currently I don’t believe Alfa Free and Xplore outperforms 75 mm and a cable. That being said, you still need to clip and unclip the cable for ...

Re: Alternatives to Alpina Alaska 75mm
I don’t know GrimSurfer My quiver is 3 basic skis a Gamme, a Falketind X, and a Tindan 86, with a MT 51 as my thin snow cruiser. Now for boots I have an Alaska BC which I like on my skinny skis, and I think it turns better than the Alaska 75 without at cable. Then for leather I have an Alico Ski Mar...

Re: Waxing for ice?
Klister works well. I would start out with Swix Red for wet and Swix Blue for ice. Now if you put klister on, be warned it migrates everywhere if you don’t remove it. Caribou have nothing on klister’s ability to cover unimaginable distances. Caribou don’t leave a sticky mess in their wake. Never fea...

Re: Alternatives to Alpina Alaska 75mm
Snow-mark I posted on Rod’s thread two boots that could be possible replacements. The Crispi Bre and the Crispi Svartisen. I believe the Bre is a Norwegian welt constructed boot, so it is most likely durable. I have heard the Bre is soft, I would probably ask Roelant if it was too soft to use with t...

Re: The Alpina Alaska Curse
Rodbelan i went on the Fey Brothers website (in New Hampshire). It appears they have Crispi Bre (looks welted), Svartisen, and some small size Antarctic. I know you would need to cross the border. I know it’s such a pain that I may never cross again, and I used to cross for an evening out! Good luck

Re: The Alpina Alaska Curse
Thank you Rod, I had originally skied that boot with the Voile 3 pin cable. When I bought a new ski, I mounted Rotte ST. I think the Rotte ST clamps on the boot better. I really hope the boot gives me good service because I have really come to like the boot. The thing is, I don’t know of a comparabl...

Re: The Alpina Alaska Curse
Rod, it stinks that your boot is failing. Can I ask which binding you are using? I currently am skiing an Alaska 75, and I really like the boot, and am hoping for a full life of service

Re: NNN BC Boot Recommendation
As stated above the Alaska BC is a really nice boot. If you can’t try it on in the UP, which would surprise me, you can try on via REI. Returns should be easy through REI. If the Alaska fits I would ski the Alaska. The Alfa is supposed to be a higher volume fit. I’ve read that the Guide has a softer...

Re: Are the narrow nordic backcountry skis miserable on tracks?
I avoid tracks, in my area there is a lot of single track that has gotten a bit wider from mountain bikes. I have an area 100 miles north of me, that has skiable snow sometimes when I don’t. My Gamme was miserable in those tracks on a twisty trail. The real problem is the trail is too narrow to ski ...

Re: Telemark boot sizing advice
I would visit Free Heel Life in Salt Lake City. Personally I would call my credit card company and lower my credit limit! Even if it’s a couple hour drive I would go. They are one of the recognizable experts. I know they carry Scarpa, not sure about Crispi but it’s likely. They also carry Voile, Mei...
