Re: warm wet snow: kicker skins vs soft kick wax (vs scales)

I have added "vs scales" to this thread. Although- when it works- I can get better performance from soft grip wax than scales- there is no question that scales can be excellent when they grip well and the advantage of not having to put on and pull-off skins for low vertical downhill-oriented skiing ...

Re: warm wet snow: kicker skins vs soft kick wax

So grip wax and scales completely failed yesterday! We got 40cm of wet, heavy soft snow in a storm on Thursday-Friday. Starting out I was determined to use red-silver kick wax- it ended up being totally useless- ZERO grip. I then moved to my waxless-scaled skis- a bit better- still not enough grip t...

Re: XC oriented ski for max float on dry snow

The one time I tried a fatter ski (Rossignol BC 125s), I hated how they drifted around on the snow and felt completely out of control on the flats. They were also dreadfully heavy to me. I have had this experience so many times and my tolerance for it- even when I am touring for turns- is decreasin...

Re: LilCliffy's Nordic Backcountry Touring Waxing

Some thoughts and experience with grip waxing on very cold snow below -25C- when the hardest grip waxes (e.g. Swix Polar) works as an effective kick wax. Obviously, the conventional solution is to glide wax the shovel and tail and only kick wax the kick zone of the ski. This is fine for conventional...

Re: XC oriented ski for max float on dry snow

but, the longer, straighter Combat Nato is definitely a more efficient XC ski than the Kom- in all snow conditions- including very deep soft snow. What do you mean when you say more efficient? It takes less energy to break trail in the NATO than the Kom? Or the NATO moves faster when breaking trail...
