Re: What do you carry in day packs? Backcountry XCd

Yeah @bwm8142 , it was -20 that morning, so we were fortunate to have a chinook wind blow in. Didn't have extra socks that time either.

Re: What do you carry in day packs? Backcountry XCd

I would agree with voilenerd. I would add that your fire equipment should contain redundancies, especially if you're going alone in a remote location. Have matches, a lighter, vaseline cotton balls, firesteel, fatwood shavings, and small fatwood kindling, etc. in case some of it gets wet. Lining you...

Re: What were they Thinking???

Sounds like they were listening to Wim Hof.

Wow, @bauerb , that is a heck of a way to learn. I'm not sure I'd be able to survive that.

By the way, is anyone here currently involved in any kind of winter/search and rescue? Just curious if you have any advice or stories.

If you ever want a cheap, effective pair of softshells, look no further than Champion (or similar brand) from Target: https://pmags.com/long-term-review-champion-brand-wind-pants-target https://pmags.com/gear-review-c9-target-running-pants Paul has many articles on finding affordable clothing for ma...

Re: Skin Width for Combat Natos

Thanks, lilcliffy. I was able to find a 45 mm mohair skinlock with metal, so I think I will go with that. Maybe a 30 mm x-skin one day, if any become available.

Re: Skin Width for Combat Natos

Perhaps the difference is the addition of a plastic pin to attach the skin just behind the heelplate?

Re: Skin Width for Combat Natos

Thanks for the advice. Having a versatile skin sounds like a good idea, but I've concluded that I will enjoy having the grip of the wide, full skin out here in the Rockies. Another question about the Asnes skins: I have noticed that the new plastic X-Skins seem prone to breaking, so I'd prefer a met...

Re: An anecdotal review of Amundsens from an inexperienced skier

Context: So overall they are a good ski for someone like me! Dude, you’re enjoyment and enthusiasm are fantastic! You don’t have to be a rock star to be having a great time. It’s great you found a ski (and it found you) that you are enjoying. It should only get better from here — have a blast! The ...

Skin Width for Combat Natos

I took the plunge this year and got the Natos. They're great! In other news, I thought I bought 58 mm mohair X-Skins from La Cordee, according to the photo on their site (which had the blue plastic tab), but it turns out they are the full length skin! (Oops). I already have a 45 mm nylon full-length...
