Those trails in the High Peaks area can be hazardous when they are icy. You may be better off on the groomed trails or consider snowshoeing or hiking.

Re: and now....the rain
Expecting about 0.5" of rain and temps > 40F today in northwestern VT. Everything has a shell of ice on it right now from last night's rain. Today should wipe out most of whatever snow we have left. Hopefully 3-6" over Sunday and Monday, but that won't help me on my weekend trip to Lake Placid comin...

Re: Nordic ICE Skaters... Les Quebecois? Je vous appelle
Last time I went skiing along the Winooski river here in VT, it had recently flooded and the flood plane was essentially a sheet of ice. We had about 1” of snow on top of that ice and I saw lots of thin double lines in the snow which I assume were skaters.

Re: and now....the rain
Here's a blurb that may help explain it: This app is ski-specific and works in conjunction with an embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip in Madshus ski construction. The camber height, flex and other specs of each ski are loaded into a global digital database allowing you to select the...

Re: Satchel’s Neophyte Nordic Backcountry Adventure Thread
Maybe I'm doing this wrong (which would explain a lot!) but I found when I started out I was using my calves way too much and this caused me to do more of a shuffle than a glide. I made a conscious effort to focus on driving with my quads and it helped a lot. I also overemphasized a toe point just t...

2.5 million
Can you imagine skiing up (and down) 2.5 Million human-powered vertical feet in just one year? "2.5 Million" from T-Bar Films chronicles former University of Vermont Outing Club member Aaron Rice as he attempts to ski 2.5 million, human-powered, vertical feet in the backcountry and set a new world r...

Re: and now....the rain
Had some decent snow over the weekend here in the Burlington area, but we had to go for high ground as all of the low lying river trails and surrounding fields were flooded.

Re: the magic and power of grip wax
Is a spray wax an acceptable compromise between doing nothing and a hard/tube wax? Pros and cons? Hey Lars, Do you mean glide wax/grip wax? I have no experience with spray grip wax. I always carry a can of liquid glide wax when I am using waxless-scaled skis- and I also use it to maintain the perma...
