Wide view is the key, along with fewer ego trips that end in an expectation to jerk somebody off. Crude, sure. But pretty accurate when you see what starts avalanches around here. Thin skin and self pleasure, not skiing.

I think Josh Madsen should have been more accountable there. But he and Craig Dostie have such a narrow focus, and frankly I don’t know if their heart was in the game to begin with.

Josh is a busy guy, and he has his life to live.

Not suggesting work for anyone else. Forum members can raise level of discussion. Requires some effort, acceptance, culture. Could point out places where this started… and fizzled… too early. Usually because someone asks an inconvenient Q that breaks a hastily drawn ego triptych.

This is funny, because this speaks straight to the drawbacks of a forum. I understand that you might feel the need to defend Josh Madsen, but to not engage with the content of my post beyond that defense speaks to the OP‘s original dilemma. But online forums can’t be a very solid two way conversation because of the nature of this form of removed human interface. I for one think it would be interesting to have a conversation on the topic of Josh Madsen’s role in telemark, but not everyone does. And doing that here would involve defending and reiterating what I originally said here. What a bore for all involved.

Having that conversation over a beer after a few runs would sure be better, wouldn’t it?

Not sure how constructive discussions about individual people can be… especially if they’re not part of the conversation. Then… it gets even harder.

We’re in a post-Tele telemark skiing world. What does that mean? Tele’s resurgence in the 60s, 70s was a cultural thing as much as a sporting one. Very strong personalities spawned very strong skiing. Lots of conflict according to what’s been written. Almost all of the “disruptors” turned into “purists”. Thinking narrowed, ideas became doctrine as the resurgence matured.

Tele has now waned in popularity. No sense arguing the point. All the signs point to the downslope. The old guard aren’t the old guard. They’re the people who upped on the train in its heyday… after the sport had shifted from a disrupting influence in skiing to a defensive fringe movement. So what… well, it explains the siege mentality, lack of acceptance for new ideas, disrupting tech.

Well past the last peak of tele… only faint echos of the Big Bang. Need to accept this and move past where the echos of the old guard are happy to spend their last days skiing… frankly, that point is fast approaching for most who are in their mid 60s.

Similar to a ski injury. Ligaments snapped in a blaze of glory. Rush to get back skiing, so inattentive rehab. Scar tissue forms, inhibits movement but can still ski. Years pass. Don’t relish the thought of deep massage, stretching to break up that scar tissue.

A lot of cultural scar tissue has formed since the 70s. Do we get in there or break it up or let things be until closing time at life’s big ski hill?

Answer depends on age, outlook, maturity. Old guard don’t have the answer. The future of the sport has already slipped out of their grasp. Playing the etiquette card is just a way of killing the conversation, stopping Qs that they can’t answer in any sensible way.

I suppose I too, am guilty of simply putting out what I want to say, and being told by another anonymous poster what is and isn’t constructive on some little corner of the Internet just shows how silly this is.

For a brief moment there I did try to engage the conversation. Alas, I fell into the same traps we always do.

Telemark skiing is a beautiful thing, key word being skiing. Here’s to hoping we never forget that. Back to the shadows for me.

Just my view. Even softened it by leading with phrase “Not sure”. That’s a round about way of saying… you might be right… nor not. It’s sure as F not telling you what to do or think.

Just sayin it’s helpful to have “the people” in the room… key to understanding what really happened. Helps read the personalities. Can do that online too, as long as the subject is part of the conversation. Lots of things get in the way of time, stoke. Things you don’t, or can’t, see. Money, marriages, illness etc. Probably what Montana was referring to…

You wanted to engage in conversation? I replied. Isn’t that conversation? Two way exchange of ideas… all that. You could ask Montana to elaborate on his comments on a busy life… maybe he knows something, is willing to share.

You wanna go to a bar and talk about ppl… knock yourself out. Wanna do it online… be my guest. The backcountry is a free world. No markers to ski between. Make your own lines and smile. They’re your lines. Nobody is telling you what to do, how to think. They are just conversing… which is what you say wanted.

It could be so much more… little/no younger skier voices… no post-ski-skiers (we will all get old, scale back or stop skiing at some point).

It sounds to me like you need to start your own ski discussion forum instead of forcing your pov onto an already existing one. Or are you here to save us from ourselves?
