Re: Altai Tao
Beautiful and very cool ski-
I don't know if I completely get it though...
A turnier and longer Hok?

Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

Yes, a longer and turnier Hok, with some side cut, so closer to a downhill ski, but not quite a Kom. It is built like a Hok, ie same materials.
First took them out skinning through some deep powder, and moved along pretty easily until the slope got to 15 - 20 deg or so and had to switch to doing steps. Then hit a crusty snowmobile track and I was zipping along. Going down in powder, 10 deg slope took mostly striding to keep going. 15 - 20 deg was slow and steady, but that was fine as I was in tight trees. Going down a snowmobile track was fast. On a crusty south facing 10-15 deg slope got going enough to make some turns.
