Who's filed a tail notch into their skis?

Post by phoenix » Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:37 pm

I'm tempted to file the tails to better fix the tail clips on my skins. The Objective's tails don't have any metal, so it would be easy enough. I know I'd need to seal the exposed laminates; I'm thinking a good slow set epoxy or some JB weld might do it, touching up if needed.
It'd be good to hear what exprience folks have had with this on other skis; I'm not set on the idea and I know it may be a bad one...

Tail clips seem unnecessary for the type of skiing I've done, but that may not cover every type of skiing.

But ya gotta have tip clips. I'd be interested in filing a skimo style tip slot in a related project.

Tail fix, no thanks, Skimo tip fix yes!
Saves weight and complexity, and can rip skins with skis on.

Yes that "ski-on skin rip" makes me envious...so much quicker/more skiing!!

It's kind of the main problem with any skin without tail clips. Those are user friendly grips for skin removal.

But with the notch style, this problem is solved in the best possible way!

I should look this up on youtube. I 'm sure there are how to's and I'm sure it's easily done.

What do I need in order to DIY the Dynafit skimo tip style?

For the less radical, both of these tail connectors work pretty well when the tails aren't straight and/or have rocker:

G3 Twin Tip Connector: https://us-store.genuineguidegear.com/p ... nector-kit
Tail connector from G3 Alpinist LT Skins (not sold separately?): https://us-store.genuineguidegear.com/p ... bing-skins

Just a happy customer.

ha sawzall! no problem getting the groove made. I guess what I meant was in the skimo tipclip department...a few years ago when I last looked at it you had to give Dynafit something like $60 just for the set of skimo tipclips which are just a rubber piece shaped like a short rope with a knot in the end, where the "knot" fits into your tip notch. Seems like somebody must have since then figured out a better tipclip DIY style.

edit PS - Maybe all ya need is a BD style tail clip, used on the tip...it gives you the removal strap which is key for on-ski removal and if you machine a groove in the tip for the tailclip hardware, you might be there. hmmm...

The voile strap being the duct tape of skiing might provide an answer somehow

Some good suggestions guys, thank you. I'm leaning toward the tail clip on those G3 Alpinist Light's; I think Voile sells some that are almost identical, if the G3's aren't sold separately.

Double bladed axe? No way... got machete written all over it.
