Fischer Sbound 112 ?

Post by aquamogal » Sun Nov 04, 2018 2:29 pm

Looking for feedback on the Sbound 112, I am 155 lbs no gear on and 5'6. Looking to go as short as possible for tree area's. I am wondering if I go 159 or 169 ? Thanks

Fischer seems to be pretty consistent at least across their S-Bound series with weight. I weight 155-160lbs (but 6'2") and ski the 179/189 depending on what I'm doing across all the skis, my wife is 125lbs 5'5" and I put her on the 169cm.

I think you'll find the 159's will be so short for your weight you will get lots of drag from the scales. I would go 169cm.

You could also look at Altai Koms in a 162 or 150cm too, for very short and lots of float. Good rocker for turnability. They are actually shorter than their stated lengths if measured by chord the 162 is something like a 156. FWIW.

Consider 179's. I'm your size and my s-Bound 98's at 169cm are shortish. I believe I'd get better Glide out of 179's.

I like very long skis for lots of reasons... But I also really, really like short skis... 8-)

I think 159 would be very cool... For tight trees, I sometimes use 180cm skis. Some other days I use 160cm skis, and sometimes 130cm ones. There is no such thing as too long or too short. They are all fun, just different kinds of fun...!

thanks i really want to tour and tele on a light set up. I got into this with a pair of 147 Hoks with 3 pin, scott excursions and asolo glissade 350. I want something with better glide that hok. I dig the feel of the glissade, I now have the bug. I really want a ski, binding, boot setup that fits with the Alpina Alaska or glissade, the scott exsursions are too heavy. So options are NNN BC, 3pin Voile hardwire, 3 pin cable traverse. Doing backcoutry out the back door into the sand dunes for ups and downs and 12 miles of ungroomed trail . I do have dreams to get the Voile HyperVector BC and NTN set up for 50 resort / 50 backcountry however that would be the 2019/2020 season. all feedback welcome:)

If you do 12 miles of flattish trails and only occasional ups and downs, I would stay away from the S112 and use something with less sidecut...

Comparing the 169 Sbound crown to OAC 160 XCD GT, I am not able to keep both,
going to use asolo glissade 350 and 3pin with and with out cable,
The xcd gt seams stiffer than the sbound.
feedback on your thoughts, thanks

Aquamogal,
I am not sure what your intended use for these skis are. I do have a pair of S-112's that are a version two topsheets previous and without the skin lock option. I do not believe that there is a difference between the new ski and mine, with the exception of appearance and yours have the skinlock. I do really like the look of the new ski.
The S-112 is an excellent downhill ski. The early rise tips come right up to the top. The deepest I get in my part of Michigan is about two feet, the S-112 easily handles 2 feet, planing right to the top. The scales on the S-112 offer very good grip. I have skied the S-112 at the local resorts downhill, it lacks torsional rigidity for steeper descents. The edges are also very thin, I have never filed mine. I decided that it was not a hard pack ski, so I let the edges be. While the grip is great on the S-112 the glide isn't. While the glide isn't bad on soft snow, when the trail gets hard you really notice the baseball card in the spokes feeling.
I see these skis are new in the box. You said you are planning on returning a pair. I don't know what your intended use is, nor your budget, but I strong prefer my Asnes Falketind 62 ski for this class of ski. I think I noticed a Backcountry.com logo, so I will assume you are in the US? Neptune Mountaineering has some of these Asnes skis in stock. There are a couple options. I sincerely hope you enjoy whatever ski you chose, and you will. I mean we're sliding on snow! The Asnes is just everything I had hoped the Sbound would be, but was not. It is a more modern design, and performs better. Check out the reviews section.
Good luck, peace
