You ever heard of this company: 7B?
http://www.7bskis.com/touring--backcountry.html

They are solid-wood cored skis, made in Idaho. They are beautiful...

Their waxless traction pattern does not extend all the way to the edge of the ski...

Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

I looked into those skis earlier this season. They seem to have a great idea with the scales not extending to the edges. They seem to construct their skis really well. I would love to demo a pair but most of the ski shops here are pretty piss-poor and don't carry much outside of major brands. :(

Why is this advantageous?

My brain is smoking but I'm not coming up with any reasons why...

Lilcliffy,

you are going to TRIP OUT. I stumbled upon a pair of waxable 10th MTN, 84-68-74. Just like my beloved ones, only 203! Just for you! Maybe the'll even ship em out to you from Colorado?
