A DAY AT CRATER LAKE RIM (CLNP), my local stomping ground.
Skinned up from the headquarters to the rim, ~700 ft. vertical to 7100 ft.

^ Looking south to the Klamath Basin. I live down in the valley.
Bushwacked up through the trees. Extreme avalanche danger on open slopes.

^ Rim towards Garfield

^ Garfield Peak far right, 8060 ft.
Not the way to get there. A better route through a bowl south.
Skiing the face is beyond me.

^ Back to the vistas from the rim

^ Wizard Island and The Watchman on the rim

^ Llaao Rock on the rim. Sun on Mt.Thielson in the background, "Lightning Rod of the Cascades"

Beautiful photos Jack, I liked how you mixed in a little Kodachrome with the monochrome. Beautiful backyard also, thanks for posting.

Beautiful! Does the lake normally freeze in winter?? Are you allowed to ski onto the island if that happens?

All of the photos were shot in color w/ polarize filter. It was just one of those days with cloud cover.

The lake rarely freezes over. The last time was in 1949.

Skiing inside the caldera is prohibited due to obvious reasons. In summer, there is a trail open to the lakeshore. There are boat tours that make a stop at Wizard Island. They store the boats on the island in the winter.
........
For scale, the lake is 6 miles across. Deepest part of the lake is ~1900 ft.
From the same source above: "The lake level had an elevation of 1,883 m (6,178 ft) above sea level at the time of the survey. ... The record clarity of Crater Lake was measured at a depth of 41 m (134 ft) in August 1994. The lake clarity is measured with a secchi disk, a black and white disk lowered into the water with a cable."

Jack, you are a talented photographer, whether it's Kodachrome or monochrome. Someday... I will purchase a camera that is capable of taking photos of grand landscapes. I don't know when that will be, but I hope I can catch on quicker than I do to many other things. For now, well I may not know how to take photos of great landscapes, I sure know when I see one!
Thanks again for sharing.

The golf course has been open for skiing this winter. Two week ago I played golf here and two weeks from now I'll play again. It snowed 3' in 3 days here in the valley and THREE FEET IN ONE DAY up on the mountain.
