Science vs. Philosophy

This is the place to debate politics, global warming, and yes, even the origin of man, whatever. Simply put, if you want to argue about off topic stuff, you've found the right board. Have fun!

LJ, you are oversimplifying science and I don't think that you fully understand what it does. We don't just put labels on things. It is a good method for discovery and observing/understanding things we had no idea existed: look at astronomy, cosmology, quantum mechanics, astrobiology, theoretical physics, etc.

And about 'truth': there's no such thing. Look at the Schrödinger's cat experiment. Look at what entanglement and quantum mechanics says about 'truth'. "Knowing and feeling the truth" like you say, are very human ways of quantifying, just like science.

You guys ever read The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Wilson and Shea?

It's pretty hilarious and about the kind of stuff discussed in this thread.

I have not read that, but I'm working on my summer reading list...

The revival of this topic along with some recent discussion at home has motivated me to brush up on my Biology - it's a science I've neglected since high school for the most part. I have a giant college level text that I'm going to brush off.

PS I love reading and learning about theology, philosophy, and even paranormal and supernatural. Despite it's difference from science, it stimulates other parts of the brain that science sometimes leaves by the wayside. I think this is partly why I'm so interested in people from other cultures - mainstream America is a bland paste of pseudoscience, greed, and vanity.

Well put and agreed.

Everything has been watered down and made easy in our culture. Look at new cars or appliances or computers: they are doing more and more thinking for us. WTF is wrong with doing your own thinking?

So I'm pretty dumb, but what I'm seeing here is:

The first - logic, analysis, order, rules, black and white

The second - freedom, creativity, innocence, personal interpretation, color

Both are very important in my world view, but must be balanced. It's the middle path, is it not?

Great interpretation Mike! Only 2 minor corrections:
The second - freedom, creativity, innocence pure knowledge/nirvana, personal interpretation, Truth and clairvoyance, color

"Logic, analysis, order, rules, black and white"
Wow... Just curious, why the frig would anyone want any of those in his life?!? Yuck...!
