Cannon/Mittersill January 28th 2015

Post by Bri7 » Wed Jan 28, 2015 9:43 pm

January 27th 2015
12h59:
Bri7: Johnny, historic storm Juno, you want to go to Cannon?
Johnny: Always wanted to go. Got a deal for me?
Bri7: Nope sorry...

20h09:
Random guy on facebook: anyone going south tomorrow?
Bri7: Yes me, Cannon?
Random guy on facebook: Ok, 8h58 Peabody express chair. If you are not there, i'm going up wihtout you!

21h00:
Bri7: Dear wife, i'll go ski on wenesday
Mme Bri7: Where? With who?
Bri7: A guy on the internet...
Mme Bri7: You know him?
Bri7: No.
Mme Bri7: You are weird...

2January 28th 2015
5h00: Time to get up, the storm shifted a bit to the east and there is less snow than expected. Cannon got 12 inches of snow (metric)

5h15: On my way to Cannon...

8h03: After a short gaz stop I finally made it to Cannon. There is only 3 other car in the parking lot. The mountain opens at 9h00.2 french canadians are parked beside me, we talk a bit without knowing that they are friends of the random internet guy.

8h45: I meet Claude (random guy) and 6 of his friends. The chair opens at 8h55.

We discuss with an intructor on our way up and he recommands that we go take a look at the Kinsman glades. The glades is closed... The patrol probably forgot to remove the rope at the entrance. We go... My hands were too frozen to take some pictures at this moment. Believe me, it was awsome! One of the steepest and narrowest woods i've been in...

Second run was the Lakeview glades

10h30:
Mittersill
Mittersill was closed prior to Juno du to lack of snow. There is a bootpack to get to the top of the mountain. The walk worth it....

The trails and the wood are not that clean and the sector is still missing some snow to fully appreciate it. It's better than nothing!

Mittersill has it all.

Back to Cannon.
Cannon is not only woods, the also have grommed trails. They looked nice from the chair. Not my kind of ski...

Last call. I have to go back north of the border. We finish with the Dj tramline. Once again we are the first to enter this trail. The view from the top is amazing.

It's not bad from the bottom either...

Sorry, not much telemark pictures (I was the only one on tele and taking pictures) and a lot of black diamond back pack, skis and poles... I hope you'll forgive me :)

Maybe you will be the next random internet person :) you have several nice mountains in new york. Are you in for a trip to Lyon Mountain after the next storm?

I might try. Is there anything more adept for intermediate xcd skiers or is all very steep? I wouldn't want the helicopter to have to carry me home :P

Steepnest is relative :) Last may Johnny took his xcd for a trip to the tuckerman ravine headwall. I had my tele gear and I had a few leaks in my pants on my way down; he didn't :)

Here's a preview:

Yeah well he's a maniac. I want to live :)

I've always read that Lyon was a steep SOB - maybe I have to walk it before I ski...

That's a great TR. I've skied all over Cannon and Mittersill but never had the chance (never had the balls) to do the tram line although I've stared at it many, many times. Well done and thx for refreshing my memory of one of the funnest hills in the east.

I can see the next video to surface...

"Lyon Mtn XCD: Mike hits a tree!"

Those guys are really cranking - no way I could ski through there that fast. I wonder if that is Pete Fish the former DEC Ranger?
