Nordic ICE Skaters... Les Quebecois? Je vous appelle
My brother is pushing me hard to get into Nordic ice skating.
I have NNN-BC (Rossi BCX 10) and NNN boots (Alpina T20, not much ankle support). Do you have a preference in binding boot combo? I'm probably going to pull the trigger-- conditions could be good, cold weather between rain with no snow... I would like to try. I live close to good spots, both groomed for it and wild and there are some local stores nearby selling equipment.
I'm not interested in buying a skate-ski-specific boot. I am a classic XC skier, not a skate skier and don't need a third pair of bar boots I won't use on skis. I want to use what I have.

It's a thing, and it's AMAZING. Thoreau used to do it and spoke eloquently about it when the Concord River would freeze back in the early 1800's. The Dutch and the Canadians are especially adept at it.

It is amazing- and yet another thing I "need"- which is to Nordic skate on the fantabulous frozen St. John River.
I have VERY limited experience with this Woods, but I would think you would want the support of the BCX10 wouldn't you?
Aren't those Alpinas a Classic recreational touring boot- only meant for striding on the groomed track?

Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

I think you're supposed to put the stiff flexor in for skating.

Last time I went skiing along the Winooski river here in VT, it had recently flooded and the flood plane was essentially a sheet of ice. We had about 1” of snow on top of that ice and I saw lots of thin double lines in the snow which I assume were skaters.

That's what I'm thinking, but a lot of the skates I'm looking at are advertised as NNN or NIS. The whole pattern is the same between NNN and NNNBC, so I'm not sure if it's just a problem with the description. Additionally, I do so see pictures with the red flexor.lilcliffy wrote:It is amazing- and yet another thing I "need"- which is to Nordic skate on the fantabulous frozen St. John River.

We need some real Quebecois to answer my silly questions!

Hey, I'm very, very good at silly stuff...!!Woodserson wrote:We need some real Quebecois to answer my silly questions!

The T20's would be too floppy... It's nice to have some lateral support... We're not talking about fluffy powder here... But AiiiiCE! Pressure is almost always on the whole skate so don't bother much with flexors, it doesn't change a lot unless performance is your priority...
Why don't you just buy wood skates? That's what I use... They are cheap (but very good), and you can mount whatever you want wherever you want. NN, NNN, NTN...

Even if there is not much play due to their short length, it's fun to experiment with different mounting points for some subtle tele-action... (Silly, I know...)
I use my skates with pins and Alaskas... You could use any of your favorite 3p boots doing so... Just add cables if you need more control...

Skates made of wood...lowangle al wrote:What are wood skates?

I paid mine like 40$ or something:
It can be done with high end plastic skates too... It's just that they are usually a lot more expensive... (The blade and skate construction is much better than cheap wood skates though...)
