Is it silly to ask:
On that day, how do you think the FT62s would have been, in comparison to the 112s?
Not as good edging, carving?
Just curious.

I was not there of course but just by the sound of the ski on the snow and how it looked, it was definitively not FT62 snow conditions. I tried them this spring on somewhat hard snow and it was more like survival skiing than actual skiing. The FT is tuned for soft snow don’t forget... but I was not there so what am I talking about

One thing I have wondered is if a lighter skier (like me) on a longer FT62 (like the 196) would be any better (or worse).
The ski would be stiffer relative to skier weight and might edge better.
But maybe the FT62 is just not torsionally stuff enough, period, for harder snow that requires more robust edging.

But, of course I already changed my mind to a 188.

Here's an other opinion on the FT62.

My xcd quiver, all mounted NNN BC:

-Asnes Mtn race 48 210cm
-Fischer e99 tour (wax) 200cm
-Fischer Traverse 178cm (gave them to my girlfriend)
-Asnes Ingstad 205cm
-Asnes FT62 188cm
-Fischer Excursion 88 189cm
-Voile Objective 178cm

The FT62 is the only ski that I'm actually able to carve on groomed slope. Because its narrow enough to put on edge with NNN BC boots, it has a lot of sidecut and it is torsionally stiff. (torsionally stiffer than any of the Fischer xcd lineup)
In my quiver, its the easiest ski for any downhill application.

The only problem is with refrozen crap because the ski is so lite and it gets kicked all over the place.

Stephen, I don't know if you are close to Steamboad? I went snowboarding over there last winter and if I was living there, I think I would use my Ingstad 205cm for offtrack xc sking and my FT62 for all my xcd adventures.

Man I believe you have the best snow conditions in the world, even the groomed trails feels like soft powder. So don't worry about the FT's, you'll love them !

You guys may do better in the lower 48 mainly due to high altitude and dry conditions. The snow here gets water saturated pretty fast. The snow on that glacier was firm and crusty. You can barely put your fingers into it. I would not have been able to even ski with the FT62s. The S112s did ok but I also had mixed mohair ez skins attached. I don't think the scales alone would work for me. It was skiing fast and the slope is quite steep at the top. Im sure some of you better skiiers would rip straight down but I am definitely not able to do that. Here's a better perspective of the saddle from July 2019 when it was melted out. the notch at the saddle is to the left of the tall spire (Lower Spire). There was enough snow cover this year that I was able to hike up on the snow and ski back down most of the way in from the pass on the right (5100ft). The tip of the spire is 6029ft. The saddle is just over 5700ft.

Thanks for chiming in.
I have lived in Steamboat. I’m hoping I can get back there for this winter for XC — not interested in lift skiing, really.
Maybe occasionally, but too much $ and people and hype and going in a circle (for me).
Love the area, and at least away from the driving-distance millions.

I’m curious what your weight/height is for the FT62 188s?
They are coming out in a 196 this year, so wondering if you like the 188 or might step up?

I’m 160 pounds / 73kg, and 6’3”+ / 192cm and torn between the 188 and 196.
Either would be fine, I’m sure.
It’s just that my weight is 188 and my height is more like the 196.
And 188 just seems short (maybe because of my height, and the long stuff i skied when I was younger).
I also have the MR48 in 210.

I say pick 196 if you are skiing in open area where you have room to make big turn. Rolling terrain.

Or 188 if you plan to go down tighter or steeper lines.

well I finally made it home today after 7 weeks.time to start planning the next trip. almost 6,000 miles driving, and a month inn Big Sky.

trail race today with my little bro. he took 3rd, I took 7th. he managed to run the correct course. I missed a turn and had to back track. cost me about 4-5mins. oops. I blame the lack of altitude for making me confused.

The first snow we get is nothing like that!

Here's doing a bit of scrambling yesterday up to Gold Cord Peak up above 5000ft. You can see the ocean in the distance. This mountain has some nice chutes for winter and spring decents. NNN BC is a nail biting experience in the early summer.
