Re: Trade War
All good, we are all frustrated. Canada doesn't even have a govt currently, just Trudeau and a bunch of people acting on feelings

Re: Trade War
Additionally, in 2023, the Biden administration put tariffs in place against Canada.
In response to the U.S. tariffs imposed in early 2023, Canada implemented $155 billion in counter-tariffs on U.S. goods. These counter-tariffs were introduced in phases:
First Phase: Effective February 4, 2023, Canada imposed tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods. This included products like orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and pulp and paper.
Second Phase: Canada announced additional tariffs on $125 billion worth of U.S. goods. This list included items such as passenger vehicles and trucks (including electric vehicles), steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy products, trucks and buses, recreational vehicles, and recreational boats.
Additionally, The Obama administration imposed tariffs and trade measures on several other countries besides China. Here are a few examples:
Steel and Aluminum (2016): Anti-dumping and countervailing duties on certain steel and aluminum products from countries like India, Indonesia, and Argentina to address unfair trade practices.
Solar Panels (2012): Tariffs and duties on solar panels from countries like Taiwan and Malaysia to counteract dumping and subsidies.
WTO Cases: The administration brought multiple cases against countries such as India and Argentina at the World Trade Organization (WTO) targeting unfair subsidies and trade practices in various industries.
Also, the Canadian dollar is down about 7% since September so a 10% tariff would really be about 5%, which producers might swallow to maintain market share. That's what China, and other nations have done to varying degrees, historically. There will be a point of "saturation", but we're not there yet.

Re: Trade War
Trump and Trudeau are in meeting currently, hope they walk out with a deal like Mexico. I fear Trudeau will make it about himself though
Edit: whelp, Trudeau did exactly what Trump requested in the first place. What a giant waste of everyone's time

Not sure what you read. Depends on which universe you speak of I guess. And there is no center of the universe. It's a void in time and space. Big Bang and all that.
And from the MBA Macro class I aced way back when.
Targeted tariffs - expensive but good.
Blanket tariffs - expensiver and bad

Re: Trade War
Trudeau statement: “ I just had a good call with President Trump.Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan (NOT NEW, ANNOUNCED TWO MONTHS AGO UNDER BIDEN) - reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working (‘ARE AND WILL’ BE - SO NOTHING NEW) on protecting the border. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar (THAT’S NEW), we will list cartels as terrorists (THAT’S NEW), ensure 24/7 eyes on the border (NOT NEW), launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime (OK, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS COOPERATING ON THAT), fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million. (ABOUT HALF THE ANNUAL BUDGET OF THE OTTAWA POLICE DEPARTMENT).Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.
Blow smoke up his butt to win.

Re: Trade War
Thank you for Yankee splaining and issue I know well
"Ensure 24/7 eyes on the border (NOT NEW)." You have never been to the border, and you don't understand this issue, and it shows. There's a well known trail called the "Pacific Crest Trail". It's a 2600 mile trail with its terminus 8 kms over the canada border. You can walk right over it no problem. Americans are currently screaming at the sky because Canada currently discontinued this privilege. Did i mention Canadians cant cross back the other way south? The thing is, you could stroll right over the border at a thousand different secluded locations, if you're hardy enough. It's an actual issue. No matter what American talking point you read about that you feel is somehow more important

Re: Trade War
You know what happens when you assume something? I lived most of my life 8 miles from the border. Went to school in Windsor. Been over and back many, many times. My grandpa was an immigrant from Canada. His forbearers landed in New France in 1664 or so. Dad was in the FSSF in WWII.
