Re: Cheap Army Surplus Climbing Skins
Why spend all that Yanqui dollar on beat up used skins when a brand new pair of similar Black Diamond/Ascensions can be had for less than $14 with free shipping? These are excellent quality, brand new in the bag. I buy a few pair every season, just for gifts. https://www.ebay.com/itm/265478314757?_s...

Re: Merrell leather boot questions
The inner boot you have might have come from their next boot which was a leather boot with a taller plastic cuff, might have been called a Merrell Extreme, everything was called extreme in the late 1980's. I didn't think of that solution, but he's right, the liner is from a different model of Merre...

Re: Merrell leather boot questions
That appears to be a pair of Merrell double leather tele boots with a Nordica or similar downhill boot liner inserted in place of the regular Merrell lower cut inner boots. I could be mistaken, but I also was selling beaucoup leather tele boots in the 80's and 90's, in Colorado, by the hundreds, and...

I PM'd the OP in 2020, who said he was working on an improved tip. Not a word about it since, and he's not posted on the board about anything since Nov 2022.

Re: Light gear does a good telemarker make?
I skied with 1st-gen Norwegian Americans from time to time when I lived in Summit County, which would've been in the late 1970's into the late 1980's. Those guys were able to do tele turns on wood XC skis using floppy Alfa boots and Troll 3-pins...even at Mountain Rescue training days at Copper and ...

Re: Q on the old milsurp skis
Those old military Karhu skis only virtue is their very low price, nothing else. The skis are very heavy, and slow.

Re: Can you actually climb with kick wax?
On one of my several times skiing the Commando Run, from Vail Pass to Vail, I did it with a larger group. This tour is long, has quite a bit of uphill, and has a huge downhill at the end, on trails inside the ski area--anyway, one skier in the group did it using only kick wax, not skins, unlike the ...

Re: Repair/frankenbinding Riva cable?
Did you try some light oil on the threads? Might oil it, let it sit overnight, then try again. You could also email or call Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder, CO; their ski repair shop sometimes has replacement parts for older bindings--yours, however, are very very old. Finally you might try to fin...
