I say cut them out. If not convinced, leave enough material on the pants to attach them again...sew, zips, velcro. Less weight is good. Easier to get at the buckles. My pants were Ibex schoeller poly/wool blend, so a bit thick, heavy material. Cutting the gaiters made quite a difference. Snow gettin...

Until it fits Mine have approximately 1.0mm total filed away. 0.5mm each side. Takes only a few minutes. Strength of the hardwire won't be affected, there's still plenty of material.

They're not the same, but can be made to fit. The Hardwire rods are thicker than the cable ends. File the sides of the hardwire until they fit the 3pc toepiece.
