Leather and skiless, the hiking thread.
Went up a new-to-me peak today with gf and dog. It was a fun one, short in distance, but more than making up for it in steepness, with 3000+ feet in under 2 miles. A little buggy in the trees and the meadow on the way up. powmia01.jpg Much nicer above treeline. powmia02.jpg Summit of Mount POW/MIA p...

Re: What do you do when you can't ski?
....... If its raining too much, we been known to risk mud and rust gumming up expensive firearms. I kill a lot of beercans. Lately for some reason I bought a 12 pack of Tecates, so for a few seconds we had animated red fountain targets, I just don't know anybody willing to actually DRINK a Tecate ...

Re: What do you do when you can't ski?
I'm in Anchorage, Athabascae. 'Big' city, but it backs up to 7.4 million + acres of uninhabited mountains, starting with the front range rising up on the east side of the city. I run singletrack from the house just for fitness and walking the dog, but I much prefer riding singletrack. The mountain r...

Re: What do you do when you can't ski?
I mountain bike, hike/backpack, packraft and trail run. I really like mountain running. Basically just fast hiking, occasionally jogging on the way up, then running down. We have tons of trails for it up here and a lot of really accessible peaks.

Re: The narrowest class of XCD Skis
I think the width is good. Just that the skins need to be broken in and flattened out a bit, and maybe cut shorter as recommended above. Not going to cut them till I've had enough time on them to consider them broken in though. As they are new, they have the grip of BD kickers, which are a nylon/moh...

Re: Salomon shelves SNS BC/XAdv boots and bindings.
Salomon has had their own AT binding system for a long time as well. I predict they start making Dynafit style bindings and just follow the same route as Atomic. They've already added the tech fittings to their AT boots. Atomic was/is all about SNS bindings, guessing some kind of partnership. Atomic...

Salomon shelves SNS BC/XAdv boots and bindings.
Happened upon the info on this site: http://www.randonner-leger.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=27687 And it appears to be true. They no longer show the boots or bindings on the Salomon US site, and only have one XCd ski listed. By the looks of it, their move to adopt the tech AT standard has pushed them...

Re: The narrowest class of XCD Skis
Got out for the first time on the MR48's this morning for a few hours of valley crust skiing. Not ideal conditions for a ski review, but it was a blast. I could definitely feel the decreased weight from the Pellestovas, and even though it was mostly skidding stem turns, on the few that I was able to...

Re: 5 photos
loving those AK pics….wow! mountain paradise. is that Anchorage you're referring to as "town"?? Your low snow years are a lot better than ours! My dogs feet start getting cold in the single digits - your dog is tough! maybe they'd grow thicker fur in AK. The town is Anchorage, Al's third photo is i...

Post five photos, no more, with brief description, that sum up what/where you like to ski. Summer's pretty much here. Our short, low snow season this winter has me missing skiing before it's even entirely over. Low angle day trips with my ladies into great scenery in the mountains above town. 111385...
