Last Call, Mont Alta, Val-David QC, 24 avril 2016

Most east coast telemarkers will tell you, winter 2016 sucked. Winter 2016 had not much to offer. El Nino's weather was terrible with the multiple rains/refreezing episodes.

Still, yesterday April 24th 2016, I was pretty sure I could still ski somewhere, I was pretty sure I could still ski on 100% natural snow. All that rain that we received this winter (and that we hated so much) had to pay off sometime.

Although we did not received that much snow during the season, all that rain we had somehow helped to increase the snow density during the season. That combine to the late spring and the north facing slope of the mont Alta help turned a catastrophical season into something finally decent.

On my way heading north, I was sceptical, the snow was nowhere to be found. The snow coverage had all melt out at St-Sauveur and even the Mont Gabriel and its propane snow gun was almost dry.

Once on highway 117, things got better. We could see some snow in the woods and in the shade. Chantecler and Belle Neige looked good with some artificial snow but I prefer natural things.

Few meters later, I parked at Mont Alta. Without a surprise I was alone in the parking. As I put my ski boots, the drivers on the 117 gave me some funny looks, it won't be the first time (neither the last one).

Although the last few meters were covered with grass, the upper part of the mountain had a complete coverage.

I've checked in my photo albums and i couldn't find any ski trip on natural snow (outside of mount Washington) that late in the season.

Ski was good but the end is near. I doubt the 6 inches of snow on the ground will last one more week. I could be wrong but I guess I will have to drive a few kilometers north to St-Donat next week if I want to ski again.

Not so long ago, my mentor, Johnny, strongly adviced me to buy some 3 pins. Now he switched to NNN as i'm just getting used to my pins. Not sure I should follow him this time. He might come up with a new thing next year...

He's not completely wrong... I prefer to own a lot of tele boots insead of one good pair :) Maybe I should sell my 2 leathers pairs, my 3 75mm and my ntn pair to buy myself one good pair of NNN. But then again I doubt I could find something decent in my size 30.5...
