Seems like a sound idea. Some skis might be too soft if you went short, which might hurt your stability or float in deep snow, that might not apply to the 88s though, they are pretty stiff.

I have changed my mind on the 179 and have decided to go with the 189 which is what their sizing chart calls for. This deciding thing with limited experience isn't easy lol
