Best ski combo for New England

Post by Aj2022 » Mon Oct 31, 2022 7:52 pm

Hi all, excited to have found this sport after researching how to get light turns in without AT gear.

Basically I’ve been researching the best setup to start with. (Before a quiver is developed) Would be mainly skiing golf courses and parks for fun, hitting small downhill sections. Don’t need the gear to be overly competent at downhill since making the small hills harder will add to the fun factor. Also will use on groomed trails with friends, but being slower is fine there. (No track though)

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best setup? I’m leaning toward an 80/60/70 design with 3 pin alaskas (or a class lighter boot). Snow typically ranges from 1’ powder, to crust, average being in the middle. Basically looking for a ski that will get me out there the most number of days.

Also, is sizing down for turn-ability something people do? Thanks!

Don't forget about snowmobile trails, either. Those can be a lot of fun, especially on weekdays when there aren't many snowmobiles.

The 80/60/70 width is good for those, because the extra width gives you some more stability when following the snowmobile tracks.

There are several excellent skis available in that width class:
- Fischer Traverse 78 (great grip, sacrifices some glide)
- Alpina Discovery 80 (good balance between glide and grip)
- Asnes Nansen (fast, stable, turns well, but waxless grip not as good)
- Asnes Ingstad (similar speed as the others, great stability in fresh snow, waxless grip not as good)
- Madshus T62/M62/Eon

All of the above are well designed, with a ski flex pattern that matches the ski's sidecut pattern, and should be good for what you want to do.

If you go NNN BC, you can also use Nordic touring skates when there's better lake ice than snow. This is why I have in Southern Ontario.

Totally worth it. When the skiing is bad the lakes can be good. This has revolutionized my winters around here. Strong recommend. Get good skates too, there's a difference. spend the coin.
