Renting tele skis in Telluride?

Post by phoenix » Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:49 am

I'm going to be visiting family in Telluride in a couple of weeks, and will have a day, maybe two, to ski. It won't make sense for me to bring skis (but I could bring boots), so I called the three shops that rent ski gear that I know of (Jagged Edge, Boot Doctors, and the mountain shop) and none of them rent telemark gear anymore.
Does anyone happen to know of any option(s) I'm missing? My alternative is to just go with alpine or AT gear, which I can ski, but haven't in 15 years at least.

Sounds to me like you will have to go over to the dark side, and rent alpine gear. A heavy duty decision, fraught with moral imperatives, and frank discussion for an undergrad epistemology course. Or at least worthy of a couple of beers.

Yeah, looks that way. Not a big deal, I skied alpine for 20+ years; started at two. Took a few runs on that gear maybe 15 years ago; I was surprised how much faster I was. It'll just feel funny being in bondage.

You might call up the Telluride Nordic Center, in town, or the Adventure Center at Mtn Village, at least in recent memory a few XC/tele skiers were working those places, might have an idea for a rental/loaner.

I know the nordic center doesn't have any tele stuff; I don't think I've come across the Adventure Center by name; I did call whatever rental shop is at the mountain... is there more than one? A few shops had stuff just a couple of years ago, seems like they've all dropped it. I'll look up the Adventure Center.

Leather boots, leather gloves, leather ski basket thongs, riding crop, ball gag, ... You just have to find where on the continuum you're comfortable.

Second this. Are you flying in to Telluride proper, or going through any places? Granted it's harder to "be back by 7pm same day" for returns, but if you're set on tele'.

Alternatively, you could "rent" from Craigslist. Contact seller and see if they'll agree to sell-then-buy-back at a reduced cost. Pay him $150, ask if he'll buy them back for $50-100, or something like that, or whatever a fair daily rate is. He can then re-sell it at $150 (more profit) or less (faster sale).
Good condition skate skis and boots for sale. Skis are 172cm and boots are size 42. Both are SNS binding compatible. $125 for the skis. $30 for the boots or $150 for the set! I can meet you anywhere between Telluride and Montrose.

II rented burly skis/bindings a few years back in Vail. can't remember the name of the shop, only that it was basement level.
