Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
Cool illustrations! Been getting into shooting and thinking about hunting from skis in the Alberta foothills. Rokslide forum has a few folks hunting on freeheel setups, and a lot of folks shoot off of crossed poles for sure

The German Army field manual also showed a double rifle sling. Allowed a skiers rifle to be carried like a backpack… was asymmetrical though. So the weapon was carried over one shoulder, not in the middle. Left room for a light pack… clever. Not done today afaik because pack sizes are very large and heavy… assault weapons shorter and hung on the front of a load carrying vest.

Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
Can anyone recommend a sling for skiing? I like the idea of double sling a la backpack, seems like it would be far more stable on the back. I've just got basic swivels on the Marlin Mountie I use for rabbits and squirrels, and no intention of changing mounts.

Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
Was reading an article about hunting on skis and came across this:
"The ideal boot and binding setup for backcountry hunting is a “tech toe” or “pin tech” binding paired to a lightweight ski mountaineering boot. These composite and plastic boots look like resort downhill boots, but the ankle is free to move fore and aft, allowing you to easily glide deep into the wilderness."
Who knew you needed plastic boots to hunt on skis?

Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
I'm not sure I can see the reasoning behind that. What if you wounded an animal and wanted to pursue it in rolling terrain? You would want to be efficient going up and down, hence you would want to avoid the transitioning required of pin bindings.
Edit, maybe I'm confusing their definition of pin tech, but they said ski mountaineering boots so I assume they refer to dynafits etc.

Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
I've noticed a trend towards ditching the sling completely and using a gun holder like the kifaru gun bearer etc, I'm just getting into this stuff though so just use a regular sling on my bolt action rifles, I'd like to find something efficient for skiing too

Re: Shootin’ & Skiin’
It was in an article about upland hunting, so I presume grouse and ptarmigan, so not really needing to chase anything down. And yes, the recommendation was for dynafit.
Will look into that kifaru gun bearer. I wonder if it gets in the way of poling, or just how well it would work with skiing action.
