The fabulous Werner Herzog documentary Happy People: A Year In The Taiga has a sequence following a trapper making skis in similar fashion. The documentary follows the trappers from a village throughout the course of a year. The ski maker in particular is my favorite and he uses the least amount of modern technology, hence the skis. Highly recommended.

Saw that documentary, it’s pretty awesome. Very tough lifestyle physically and mentally.

Term "documentary" used loosely for any Herzog but this one in particular. That guy is something.

I'm not really sure what your point is here MCA. Herzog is hilarious, a treasure and in this case beautifully documents a small, remote group of people giving us the gift of the knowledge of their very existence. I also particularly enjoyed Encounters at the End of the World.

Don't get me wrong, he's a brilliant filmmaker. I was confusing this one (which he actually didn't film, just edited someone else's film down to 1/4 its original size and added his narration) with Bells of the Deep, which, along with several other of his documentaries, has staged and fabricated elements. It all fits in with his, uh, interesting theory of truth and reality.

I really enjoyed that movie. I found it interesting that when he compared modern xc gear to his home made wide skis he found the xc gear to be much more tireing.

Here is the ORIGINAL instructable with skins. Starts about 8 min in. Motivated me to buy some Hoks. I am good with hand tools but wasn’t motivated enough to make them by hand. And where do you find a dead horse???
