Full length skins for Asnes Nato

Post by archeandirtbagger » Sun Jan 05, 2025 7:52 pm

Does anyone have any recommendations on full length climbing skins to use with the Asnes Nato skis? I have the kicker skins, but I don't think the full length coltex(?) skins for them are sold in Canada/North America.

Ideally I'd like to get ones with a rear clip that fits in the slot on the tail of the skis. I have a full length set of BD skins, but they lack the tail attachment which can be a problem in sloppy conditions or thick bushes. There are no shops near me that sell that sort of thing, so I'd have to order it.

Link to skin making parts:

Link to skins off the roll, remember the length needs to be ski length x 2:

Link to a XC skin, only 50 mm wide, not NATO 62 mm:

I would give the nice folks at Skimo a call.

You can buy the correct Black Diamond USGI 60mm full length adhesive skins, complete with tail hooks and tip stretchers, and brand new, on ebay for about $21.00 shipped. These are long enough for 210+cm skis , so can be trimmed to fit.
I've purchased several pair of these skins in the last few years as backups and loaners, and party gifts for ski patrol events. Top notch.

Per fgd135's recommendation, I use the military surplus Ascension skins (the instruction sheet says "Black Diamond / Ascension," so they were probably made in the mid 1990s, before Black Diamond acquired Ascension Enterprises) with Åsnes Ingstads. They are really nice skins. The glue has not deteriorated in storage at all.

If you want to add tail clips to skins, Black Diamond ski straps fit the Black Diamond metal tail clips. Get a pair of the 25in ski straps and cut them in half, or the length you need (the replacement tail kits from Black Diamond and G3 have really short straps) and sew them on with a sewing awl. And you will still have a pair of ski straps.

Thanks all for the advice. I've ordered the surplus Black Diamond ones off Ebay, and will see how they work out, I may end up putting a tail clip on as per Capercaillie's method, or using a Pomoca repair kit. I also have a pair of old G3 skins from a long gone set of AT skis that I could probably reuse the tail clips from.

Nice, sounds interesting.

Nothing that affordable for EU it seems. :(

A better way to install the Black Diamond Ascension skins is to toss the green elastic thingy in the recycle bin, Use two hammer rivets to secure the tip bar to the skin (and/or sew it), and install this adjustable tail from Contour Skins. It costs like 15 bucks. Tradeinn.com is a reliable outdoor retailer out of Spain and ships worldwide they have it for 14 EUR a pair.
