22 Designs first NTN binding - Outlaw

That's what we call CAD - cardboard aided engineering.

Sorry that was rude I teased you with no explanations...dnt_upton wrote:Care to elaborate?
I had this idea previoulsy this week. It was cold outside and I was naked in my bed reading my favorite book (A book on homosexuality among christians). Of course I wasn't really paying attention to the text and my mind kept focusing on the cold weather outside, and one thing lead to another and I was thinking telemark, again !!!
I had this idea, THE idea! I was thinking of all the bindings available on the market and how each had something special that the other didn't have.
Rottafella NTN have a release but the cups break often and the boots choice sucks
TTS have instant engagement but are fragile and the boots choice is worse than NTN
75MM usually have a good lateral stiffness but once your boots are worn out you suffer from rocket launch
Bishop's bomber are bad ass and they look so cool but they don't release.
So I came up with this idea, create a binding that would:
-Release
-Have instant engagement
-Use the 75mm duckbill
-Look even more bad ass than a bishop bomber
-Have the most lateral stiffness ever saw on planet earth
-Be indestructible
So I did a few calculation on a sheet and came to the conclusion that it was possible! So yesterday I stayed late at work. After extinguishing a few fire due to the wood mold. I managed to complete a prototype. I can't give you all the details yet and i'm filtering some pictures... Johnny is really trying hard to sell the patent to Rottafella so we can both ski 180 days per year. So right now it's all I can show you.
As soon as it get colder I'll be able to test the prototype on something else then the glacier in my backyard at St-Sauver, QC. I'm pretty sure it will work, not sure it will release adequately but this is not a major concern...
Please be patient. It's coming. Pictures from my backyad yestarday before work!

I'm not sure I follow your calcs... I see a drag formula, a splitboad ski, some limits? and an integral which appears to be calculated correctly up until the last step, at which point I need to verify...Bri7 wrote: So I did a few calculation on a sheet and came to the conclusion that it was possible!
Not sure how that proves your criteria?

I'm fooling everyone but you with my calculation The calculations were there for entertainnement purposes (Ron always had scientific calculation for every problems. It made me laugh everytime).
Re: 22 Designs first NTN binding - Outlaw
I snickered at the calculations/sketch when I first viewed it. Hilarious write-up and photos. Good entertainment AND it looks like you are actually working on a binding! Do you suppose they will work with the cowboy ski boots?Bri7 wrote:I'm fooling everyone but you with my calculation The calculations were there for entertainnement purposes (Ron always had scientific calculation for every problems. I don't want to direct the conversation away from Bri7's telemark breakthrough, but I really appreciate all the feedback on my original question.
I got a solid deal on the Freerides by getting them this summer ($320) and am not planning to put skins on them too often, so I'm leaning towards letting others continue to be the Outlaw guinea pigs in this post-beta phase. Although, I'm not in a huge rush to mount my Freerides, so I could return them in early December if the user reviews continue to be really positive when the Outlaws ship in a few weeks.
I probably should have started with this question, but does anyone even know if the Garmont Prophets would work with the Outlaws? I've already bought those boots on eBay, so if not, I don't really have a decision to make.

Prophets will work fine with Outlaw or Freerides (so long as you have the correct binding size for the boot) (i.e. small or large).
Keep in mind, fit is really important on Prophets, or there's a good chance you'll start crushing/banging toes on lower turns. The Prophet is pretty notoriously bad for heel hold given the shell design, lack of instep buckle and volume of the ankle area. Lots of people could never get the prophet to ski well for them, and others had to add lots of padding in the achilles area to get some heel retention. The other kicker is that those toe boxes tend to deform when the bellows max out, and it effectively shortens the boot length and can torture toes especially with a 'performance' fit. Just like any boot, it works for some, and not for others, but the list of people it seemed to not work for, was a bit longer than other boot offerings.
