Advice on new skis
Re: Advice on new skis
No problem.
Lots of info on the S Bound 78 on this site. We've had a few people who own them.
And here' a good deal on last years model. No easy skin, but IMHO, I don't think it's necessary for a ski like this.

A 189 would probably be a better size for you in this ski, but really Fischer runs a little short, so 199 measures I think 194? chord length. I do not find them excessively long in my height and have no problem turning them.
I've skied them on everything from deep fluff to an inch (literally) of corn. They work best (for turning) on the consolidated snow i.e. I've had the most fun with them on the corn.

Re: Advice on new skis
The sizing chart is all over the place with the Fischers. Looks like the new 78 traverse comes in just 3 sizes, 169, 179, and 189????
Re: Advice on new skis
Yeah they dropped the 199. No one wants long skis anymore.
I'd think you'd want at least 189 at your weight if you plan on actually skiing some distance.

Most of my skiing is like this on Alpina Discovery (68)s. I don't think they turn particularly well, but they definitely climb well. This would be a good choice if you want a waxless ski that climbs well.

Also the talk is the new 78s have more camber??

What part of Ak. are you from GLB? Where I ski I'm never to far from challenging terrain and I find a good do it all ski to be around 70mm in the waist and around 185 long and lightly cambered, and I'm about the same size as you.

Where did you read that?GLB wrote:Also the talk is the new 78s have more camber??
That could be, but the trend has been reducing camber. None of the previous S Bound series had a lot of camber. The 78s were the stiffest, highest camber of the bunch though. It wasn't really a true double camber in the sense I think of double camber though.
Re: Advice on new skis
That would be more like the Excursion 88 or the S Bound 98 in Fischer world. A 189 Fischer is a 185 from other ski manufacturers.lowangle al wrote:I find a good do it all ski to be around 70mm in the waist and around 185 long and lightly cambered, and I'm about the same size as you.
Lightly cambered is the trick. The Madshus skis feel a bit softer, but I think as we found last year it's that they have a softer tip and tail. The camber strength is fairly close to the Fischers when measured.

I just checked out this year's Fischer 78 at the shop yesterday - "traverse" I think. Most interesting, it's very different than the "brownies" I have from last year. It's got WAY more camber. It looks like a fatter E99, like an XC ski in ...

In this thread a couple people are talking about the extra camber.
