Yeah- don't know much about the previous gen E-99. I have skied on them a couple of times- but it was many years ago- and I honestly can't really remember much other than that I did like them.

Certainly lighter- not sure about XCier flex...Don't know enough about the previous gen's flex. What I do know is that Fischer has definitely tweaked a number of aspects of the current E-99 to make it more manageable on the downhill. It is still a "XC" ski (despite the Norwegians considering it a "mountain ski"), but those open tips are definitely intended to improve turn initiation. No idea whether the current E-99 is more manageable on the downhill than the previous generation...The current E-99 is definitely an excellent XC ski.

The Gamme 54 and the current E-99 at least appear to be incredibly similar in intent and design. It would seem that the Gamme is at least a little more expedition-worthy though...

Pretty sure the ones I recall were blue/black without (I don't think) rocker. Profile was straighter than Glitts or previous versions and they seemed to be thicker underfoot like my E89s.

Actually remind me of my E89s with the graphics.

Those are identical to my E-99 Crowns- except they are the waxable "Tour" model.

Same sidecut profile as my current E-99 Tours. The weight, stiffness, flex and thickness of the two gens are identical as well- the only difference I can see is the Nordic rocker camber on the current E-99.

OK - the shovel, tips and tails are a little narrower on those guys than the old ones. 66/54/61 vs 68/55/62. The older BCX had the same profile as the current glitts.

Great discussion. Yes I ordered a pair of the Glitts (200cm) yesterday from the-house, amazing price, and NNNBC Manual bindings separately. I'll mount the bindings this weekend. Advice on location relative to the balance point welcome.

If they aren't what I'd hoped, I'll keep eyes open for some E99s, not too worried about losing much if I have to sell the Glitts considering what I have in them. But very much looking forward to trying something new (and, yes, different from what I've been on).

My real splurge was a pair of Alaska boots, probably overkill for much of what I do but do appreciate leather, and expect these to last me a long time through highly variable conditions. Also stocked up on some new waxes, and pole baskets to see if I can salvage at least one of the multiple beat/battered sets in the bsmt.

Looking forward to testing them in the BWCA in a week and a half, no hills to speak of but some bushwhacking through largely-abandoned portages should be fun, as should the lake travel.

Wicked kit man. Good that you got the manuals over the autos too.

The Alaska is certainly not overkill on the Glitt- IMO it is the perfect match!

For XCd- I would mount on balance point. You are going to be picking those skis up a lot on a steep hill anyway- so I would want the XC balance of BP.

I mounted my Glitts at chord, which was a tad forward of balance (maybe 1-2cm). It didn't make them particularly turny, but maybe more so than at BP. I never had any issue with them for K+G there. They did climb great as well.

I started off with Glitts and Alaskas (but 75mm). It's a good XCd setup. I ski my Alaska with E89 and up, it's a fine match. That boot will not hold you back. It's a tad heavy compared to a track boot, but the waterproof/comfort/durability/support more than make up for the few extra grams.

Enjoy your trip to BWCA - wish I could come!

This will definitely increase grip/traction over BP- will reduce glide a bit. You can extend you kick wax forward if you need more grip regardless.
