I would not wear out Excursions on piste if I was interested in using them for backcountry skiing, as there currently is no equivalent. T4 if it fits, is similar though, or if one has a backup boot, Excursions could be used.
I would prefer a higher boot though, and used Scarpa T2x, Crispi CX4/A, Garmont Libero as well as similar boots are currently widely available used. The selection will decrease though. Hopefully there will be lower and softer NTN/TTS boots by then.
