Do I need a heel piece for a 3-pin binding?

I wonder if those toothed heel pieces got left behind as XC divided more between BC and Classic XC?
Don’t need the teeth in a track and the NNN BC binding gets better lateral stability with the binding rails than it would have with the toothed heel pad.

If it was me, I would want the heel pad just to keep my heel at the same level as the ball of my foot, and maybe for ascetics, ‘cause that’s what’s “supposed” to be there.

It seems like tipping the foot up 1/4"+ is a significant consideration. Also, who wants their feet to do the opposite thing of what a heel riser does?
