atv winch is smaller and lighter that truck winches, this ones cheap. very slow check the manual and see if it will run at 24 volts for high speed

these might be a better option cause they are fast and torque, and utilize off the shelf auto part from a ford truck starter. the company is called" Reel Balls" winch I think they are still in the business. try ebay for F3B plane winch

amazon sells it for $100, i think its plenty strong for what we need it for

Yeah, I think the hollow braid polypropylene is a good bet, you could even use an adjustable splice like a whoopie sling and tape up the excess/tuck the ends to get a bit of length adjustment. Pretty small and slippery though, are you thinking a fixed handle that you run back down, or a removable rope grab/nutcracker?

was just gonna tie a slip knot hitch or prusik loop handle, and i figure i'll use the car or truck's e-brake to set the line tension on the winch receiver

Oh yeah, Prusik makes sense, especially since you can stop the winch to remove
