Some outdoors decisions are plain foolish, but then there’s also a lot of wiggle room for people to make their own risk assessments based on experience, ability, etc. Tom’s not naive when he heads into the backcountry, and one of the perks of XCD skiing is the light gear eliminates much of the temptation to ski risky terrain. Besides, Tom skis that area probably dozens of times a season, and his wife was nearby. They really are looking for anything to be critical about on that forum.
