Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
Yep, skimo gear skates ok. It's about the weight of a Mountain Race 48 with nnn touring binding/combi boot setup. I've seen skimo guys claiming on the internet that the skis weigh the same as skate skis, but I'm pretty certain they're mistakenly basing those claims off of misinterpreting manufacturers' listed weights per ski with listed weights for a pair of skis. The skimo skis are very light, but they're more like MR48 or Powerlite weight(@1400-1600 grams for a pair). The bindings are similar in weight to skate ski bindings and the boots are similar in weight to nnnbc boots. Very expensive stuff compared to nordic backcountry, but they serve an application that nordic backcountry can't come close to at those weights. The skis have soft or flat camber, are really short and very curved(compared to the skis this thread is about), so they're not as fast on the flats and don't hold wax. They blow nordic backcountry away on anything steep or twisty.

Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
How much does a MR48 run?
Just for comps sake, a NNN-BC boot is $250-300 new, and binding is $100.
Skimo has to be double that, at least!

About $300 shipped to the US from Sport Albert. https://www.sportalbert.de/struktur-201 ... 17_l.dpageMikeK wrote:How much does a MR48 run?

But again, different application. Nordic backcountry skis(SBound 98, Epoch, etc) with similar dimensions to skimo race skis weigh a lot more than skimo race skis.
Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
Yeah - totally different applications. But really, you pay A LOT more for a little less weight and dh performance.
Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
So $700 for a brand new, in season, higher end nordic backcountry setup. AT setup similar in weight would run you twice that or more. Makes me wonder how light nordic backcountry would be if companies applied the same materials and design effort to nordic backcountry as they do to skimo. Extensive use of carbon fiber and narrower metal edges would probably bring the MR48 down 200-400 grams. Carbon fiber, titanium and ccf liners in nnnbc boots would probably cut the weight by 1/3. Ti metal components in nnnbc bindings, with carbon fiber instead of plastic and less material to facilitate clearance of snow and ice could cut nnnbc magnum binding weight in half or better.
Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
Yeah - 1/3 might be aggressive for the boots, but half at least I'd guess. They are already quite light compared to most other ski gear. I bet the NNN-BC binding could be made at half the weight.
You could probably hit 5 lbs total pretty easily. Considering it'd probably be like 8/8.5 lbs as is, that's pretty good.

Top of the line skimo race boots are already 400+ grams lighter than nnnbc boots with cuffs.

Stupid light skimo race boots. I'm sure carbon fiber has it's limits for forefoot flex, but I imagine you could keep the weight similar if you were willing to spend the money. Especially considering you would be ditching the heel and cuff locking hardware for freeheel applications.

Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
The lightest possible skimo setup you can get(skis/boots/bindings) is about 5.5 lbs.
Re: Fischer steel light wax ski 47-44-46
Yeah it looks like 950 to ~500. I'm wondering how much more you can take out though and not have to add back in for bellows flex/etc. Still, already at 52%.
