Complete skiing. Near perfect continuity between flats, uphills and downhills.
Re: Complete skiing. Near perfect continuity between flats, uphills and downhills.
I use the 60mm and 62mm full length pomoca race pro 2.0 mohair skins on my FT62 with colltex skin wax. This setup glides and grips beautifully in dry colder temps with shallow snow depth or just a dusting over a hard base. you can even keep the skins on for the downhill when it is icy. The weakness is the adhesion. it tends to fail after you remove them. dry snow can get on the back and it just wont stick anymore. it takes a while to warm them back up in your jacket. I usually bring 2 sets or backup xskins.
for non-notched tipped skis, I use the Contour brand 50mm full length skins on my Skog and also the Sverdrup. I have both the mohair and the mixed. Mohair performance is similar to the pomoca skins but I like the adhesive better on the contour skins. The mixed works well in nearly all temp ranges but doesnt glide as well unless it is very icy. Also good to leave on in icy conditions.
Polar, green, and blue extra waxes do not affect or damage the skin adhesion. so i have the skis waxed too as additional backup.
And needless to say, I have done thousands of vertical with these skins. They just work.

I spend a lot of time reading about skis and bindings and boots. But you know what I just re-discovered is the most important thing?
SNOW
We have over a foot of light and fluffy lake effect/lake enhanced snow on the ground now. Last night I had a blast on my Asnes MR skis and Alaska boots at the XC center. It is such a huge difference from the wet and heavy stuff I have been trying to push around. These skis do turn! Just make the telemark stance so I don't fall on my rear, then edge a little bit, and they make fun gentle arcs.
The rotary control is also pretty good with the NNN-BC Alaska boot. I can snow plow and sort of skid a turn when I have to (TREE!).
But man, snow makes all the difference.

Good snow makes a big difference, I hope you keep getting more of the same.

Re: Complete skiing. Near perfect continuity between flats, uphills and downhills.
Here are some photos and a short video of me trying to do some yo-yo skiing on county open space land. It is not the mountains, but I enjoyed getting out and skiing on some of the back dune hills.
I had some slightly more adventurous runs than what is shown in the video. It is harder to ski with two poles in one hand and my phone in the other hand!
Even with good snow cover (for here) there is always a big log or something hiding in what looks like a nice open place to ski.
I thought I would want my 3/4 length skins for this. They ended up staying in my pack the whole time. Two coats of swix blue extra from tip to tail was all I needed. I think the skins may stay home next time.

Even with the occasional snow, now, in the morning, the short ski season here was over some weeks ago.
Thank you all for the help, advice, and gear trading this season.
I really need to decide I like sailing and move to the ocean, or decide that I like skiing best and move to the mountains. The long time between seasons is not much fun.

Coho salmon now, maybe some kings up until end of May. Summer is river fishing and mountain biking ing the rolling hills. Always being alert for an off shore wind to “flip” the big lake and bring cold water close to shore. Then it’s time for big, drag screaming, king salmon! I fish the big water in a solo canoe, just to keep it interesting!

The end of the ski season can be tough if you don’t have something to transition to. I was fishing within day of my last ski.
