Wolverine

Grey man meets Mr. Wolverine.
Had fun following these wolverine tracks late this afternoon with my 10/11 year old son, who is nuts over the X-men and Wolverine in particular.
I bumped into a wolf the other day on a trail near home - but that was nowhere near as wonderful as spending an hour or so tracking this guy/gal and seeing what he/she was up to.
Gorgeous day to out and about on the British Columbia - Alaska border with my son.

A couple of hours earlier we hiked out to a rocky point with a spectacular view down upper Lynn Canal (a fjord) and were watching seals chasing fish on the snow-free Alaskan coast.
Magical day.

Man, no need for a resort there. Best skiing I've seen this year right out you your back door. Those low angles just above the treeline on the mountain in the distance look like they be fun to explore. Probably where that wolverine has it's den too.

Man, and here I was thinking it was so cool to have seen fishers around my skiing grounds, here in the "Wolverine State". Cool stuff.

Fishers are super cool to see. Very rare in my part of the world. Better odds of seeing Bigfoot. Ive only seen Fisher in the Great Lakes region too, but I have seen what are probably their tracks in the Northwest.

I came across a torn up porcupine recently. Actually just chunks of it's hide (quills still attached) and figured out it was a fisher that did it in. Hard to believe anything preys on porcupines, but I hear fishers kill them by repeatedly attacking their face/snout, which have no quills.

Sounds like a fisher kill. I'd always heard the same about them attacking the snout.
For his Ph.D., Roger Powell (retired biology prof from North Carolina State University) did the most indepth field study of fisher and wrote a book about them, which is a good read if you want to learn more about them. His field work was mostly in the Ottawa National Forest in Michigan.
