Some end of the season sales have the Madhsus Panorama M78 on real good deals. I entered this season with the plan of getting some sbound 98’s, but never found them in my size and with whats going on in Ukraine they probably wont be back in the stores for sometime.

I searched this site and just found passing mentions of the Panorama skis.

Who has them or spent time on them? How do you like them? Where and how do you ski them? Is the lack of a shorter skin system a big negative? Any other insight? Climbing performance? Descending? Kick and glide?

If that is 78 mm underfoot, then one could make the assumption it hasn’t changed much from the Karhu/Madshus Annum
The scales grip like scales, and from what I have seen, they are capable downhill, in good backcountry snow.
I’m still on the assumption the design hasn’t changed in 15+ years. Same class of ski as a Fischer S-112

I was kinda wondering if they are the Annum with a new name? I wasnt too familiar with that ski, so I was unsure. some quick googling and searching this site has revealed substantial reviews and comparisons.

The addition of the word "Panorama" certainly contributes to the confusion as there was clearly a short (~2yr)production run of Panorama 62&68 that are very different from the Eon&Epoch (I have never seen anything to suggest that this production run included a "78"- which was what I was particularly keeping my eye out for). (The "62" ski that rodbelan is speaking of on this site is from this production run and it does not equal an "Eon").

My recent inquiry into the current M62 confirms that it is identical to the old Eon (i.e. last-gen Karhu XCD GT)- even the length is identical (i.e. the "192" is the same length as the old "195".)
This would perhaps suggest that the current M68&M78 are back to the old Epoch&Annum designs...

I would contact Aventure Nordique directly (they would know fo shu) for confirmation on the current M78 (i.e. whether it is identical to the Annum/last-gen XCD Guide): https://en.aventurenordique.com/nordic- ... a-m78.html

The are good deals on this ski and I can't help it. I'm looking for something wider and tighter turning than my SB98. I don't care about the lack of a short skin option here because I won't be using this for pulling a toboggan or as a utility ski. Just for the ups and downs and I could use a full skin for the steep stuff.
My 98's are 189cm and I really like them. I want the M78 in 182cm. Gotta squiggle between the trees here and there. Sizing info on Madshus products is extremely limited, but one site said to go with the 192cm if over 170lbs. I am 182lbs, but with pack and boots etc closer to 200lbs when my water bottles are full.
It's this shorter ski a good idea?
I want to climb and ski down even in the deeper snow if I can find it. The climb will be good but what about the float?
It's the enough difference from my SB98'S to warrant this ski?

I can tell you that there is no difference in turn radius between the Karhu/Madshus 68/78 (i.e. Epoch/Annum)- the difference is in width and potential effective flotation-
at 185lbs I definitely see a marked difference in effective flotation between the 68 and 78.

Traditionally, the S-Bounds have had a stiffer flex than the Karhu/Madshus "equivalent" XCD models-
I was recently flexing the current Fischer 98- and while it is less cambered than past designs- it is definitely stiffer than the Karhu/Madshus XCD M68 (i.e. "Epoch".)

So- due to flex- at your weight- I would not assume that the M78 will offer you more effective flotation than the Fischer S98- not unless you go with a longer M78.

The softer-rounder Madshus models are easier to pressure/bend into a tighter turn than the stiffer equivalent S-Bounds- but they don't have shovel-rocker of the S-Bounds. Although easier to pressure/bend- I doubt the turn radius is signifcantly different between any of the Fischer S-Bounds vs Madshus XCDs...

As another relavent comparison- my new Rabb 68 is 68mm underfoot and at 180cm, it definitely offers more effective float and stability in deep soft snow as our 185 Annun (M78)- and I think at least as good as the 195 Annum...

The camber and flex of the Fischer S98 and Rabb 68 are close (though the Rabb is torsionally more rigid)- the Madshus M68 is softer. The Rabb 68 has a tighter and more variable turn radius due to having more rocker and taper in the tail.

I am thinking if you want more float than the S98 offers- you want a ski that is wider or stiffer than the M78...

Thanks! So no $278 ski for me, . Guess I'll have to save up for a Voile for this purpose.

lilcliffy's list of favorite skis makes me think that the Kom may be worth considering -- and maybe even cliffy can speak to how it compares with the others he just compared -- surely more float than the s98 and less $ than Voile. Probably the longest Kom given 200#.

I'm 190lbs with the m78s with a length of 182 and they float well enough for the foot deep snow. I've been able to take them down 28 degree slopes in good conditions using nnnbc rossignal bc10s. I also own a longer pair of Eons which I dont like at all and are very difficult to get to turn. I say buy them.
