Free downhill skiing with a T bar. Doesn't look all that steep but looks like a perfect place to xcd.
Next time I think I'm going to ski here for a few hours during the day and ski out to the camp at night with a headlamp.

Pretty awesome..When they are "closed" can you just pull yourself up by the rope hand-over-hand ?
Looks like 200 feet of vert..Perfect! Crybar country!

We need more of this! Does anyone know what happens with all those T-bars they remove everywhere? Let's buy a T-bar together!

Almost every little town in the Adirondacks used to have these instead of sledding hills. Most of them are defunct. A couple are still going but I had no idea about this one.
Not sure what they do with the T bars... would be great for the backyard though ... well that is if I didn't live in the city...
One can make a tow rope pretty easily.
My mother still owns about a hundred acres in the Finger Lakes and has about a 200-300' vertical ridge on the property. A little logging work in the summer and it would be xcd heaven.

Does anyone remember the old dual t-bars that took you to the summit of Cannon mountain? Those things were more of a challenge to ride up on than the ski down was!

T bars are terrifying... it's no wonder they got rid of them.
Johnny that place is TOTALLY & COMPLETELY FREE! It's only running Sat, Sun and holidays though. It's paid for by the Town of Newcomb.
I didn't take any pictures but there are videos on the net. I'm hesitant to link them because they are also associated with another ski forum. Look under 'Goodnow Ski Area' and you should find a couple (not mine)...
My wife said she saw a sign that said no XC skis, but they let us ride the bar. I'm assuming they mean skis without metal edges.
Conditions were horrible - it was the iciest corduroy I've ever come across. No one had even skied the upper part, I'm assuming because it was so crusted. On a warmer day or after some fresh snow it would be great.

A T-Bar to the top of Cannon? Gee that must be scary...! I remember riding the Poma lift here when I was a kid. The liftline was a double black diamond trail. I had several nightmares about it. Still, that was my favorite lift. You were never sure if you were going to make it to the top or not. The bar was almost impossible to grab at the start. And on the steepest part, the lift would raise me 2-3ft from the ground. Scary AND fun...!
Wow. Goodsnow Ski Area. I wanna live in a town like this. This is the most brilliant thing I've seen in years. Ok, it's quite the opposite of steep and high. But can you imagine the effect on the local kids? That would have a huge impact on the community here. Most of the local kids will never be able to afford skiing. Fernie, BC might have been named "The COOLEST town in North America" by the Rolling Stone magazine, they sure were not aware of a town like Newcomb. How's the town itself?

Come ride the T bar in Brattleboro Vermont.... One of the oldest operating community ski hills in the East. Lift tix are only 5 bucks!! http://www.vtsnowsports.org/
It's a place I'd love to live though - it has hiking, skiing, and paddling in every direction out your back door. The views are absolutely spectacular as they have the best ground level views of the McIntyre range (Algonquin and Iriquois Peaks), Mt. Colden, and Mt Marcy. Those three absolutely dominate the skyline to the north. I should have stopped to take pictures and I couldn't find any on the web of that view (I figured it would be common, I saw it from the road ).
Gore is less than an hour away if you want big skiing... if you want bigger skiing WF is 2 hrs away (it's actually pretty close as the crow flies but the high peaks wilderness is in the way).
Anyway - it's about 180° from Lake Placid, but LP is a short drive away if you want to wine and dine.
You'll usually find me in the small towns away from the tourists or out in the woods when in the Adirondacks... although on occasion I can be spotted in Lake Placid or Lake George
Maybe someday someone will give me a job where I can live there and work from home... until then, it's figuring out how to buy the ski shack.
